[Kumamoto Prefecture, Kumamoto City] Restaurants with Great Steak

New Kumamoto Tei

New Kumamoto Tei is a popular spot just a 2-minute walk from Hanabatacho Station in Kumamoto City, known for its hands-on Teppan-yaki Yakiniku where you grill your own steak, along with horse meat dishes as the main attraction.

Most of the seats are in fully private rooms, and (Each) table is equipped with a teppan grill. In addition to table seating, there are also tatami rooms with Sunken kotatsu seating.

The best part of this place is the self grill style, where you cook your own steak. You can enjoy meat centered on the local brand beef Wao (local brand beef) at your preferred doneness and timing.

For Wao, you can choose from Top blade, Sirloin cap, or round meat. It is said to have a melt in your mouth texture the moment you take a bite.

They also offer steak dishes featuring Higo Akaushi (Japanese Brown beef from Kumamoto) and Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black Wagyu), available as A la carte or as part of a course.

The steak made with premium filet, a rare cut of Kuroge Wagyu, is a limited-quantity menu item. For those who want a meatier, more wild style, the Australian beef filet is also recommended.

Go up to the 2nd floor from the restaurant area, and you will find a calm Japanese-style Private room space. The akagyu (Japanese Brown beef) soup served as the appetizer is delicious right from the start. Above all, the main dish is the Tenderloin steak. I could tell at a glance that it was fresh, so I had it extra rare. The Tenderloin is light and tasty!

Even with the same meat, they can adjust the doneness for each person, whether you like it rare or well-done, and they can also reheat it! Every cut has the quality you would expect from a Teppan-yaki place. Since they let the ingredients speak for themselves, the quality is very high. Because you cook it yourself, I thought it was reasonably priced for the quality of the meat!

I ordered the set with akaushi (Japanese brown wagyu) diced steak and Hamburger Steak. The diced steak fills your mouth with the rich taste of the meat as soon as you take a bite. When I cut into the Hamburger Steak with chopsticks, the juices overflowed, and it looked delicious at a glance. One bite confirmed it tasted just as good as it looked.

Medium-rare akaushi (Japanese brown beef) is neatly arranged over the Rice bowl, and it comes with soboro minced meat, shredded oba (perilla leaf), and wasabi, topped with an onsen tamago (soft-cooked hot spring egg) in the center. The medium-rare akaushi is tender, juicy, and full of flavor. It is well seasoned with a sweet and savory soy sauce-based sauce that brings out its rich taste.

・Hamburger Steak Strip loin Combo
The Hamburger Steak and Strip loin steak sizzle on the iron plate. The Hamburger Steak is plump and juicy, not overly meaty, relatively light, and nicely peppery. The Strip loin steak is medium rare and tender, with a savory aroma and rich flavor spreading across your palate.

・Garlic rice
It came out on a piping hot Teppan-yaki plate~so hot it even made crispy scorched rice! I think the meat on top was pork spare ribs? It was quite hearty and juicy. Partway through, I tried pouring on some steak sauce. The sauce had a slight citrus tang. Pretty tasty.

They carefully explain each dish one by one. The service and food are both excellent, from the melt-in-your-mouth texture of Waoh (Japanese Black Wagyu), Kumamoto’s pride, to the flaming flambe performance. To finish, the garlic rice has a wonderful harmony of beef broth and garlic, and I look forward to it every time.

Each of the Appetizers was carefully made, and the kuruma ebi (tiger prawn) from Amakusa, scallops from Hokkaido, ayu (sweetfish) from Nagasaki, and tako (octopus) from Amakusa were all prepared in a Chinese style, which made sense since the head chef has a Chinese cuisine background, and they were delicious. The braised shark fin and Shanghai crab miso was served in a bowl made from citrus peel, which gave it a nice aroma, and it was extremely good. The meat was also cooked well, and it came with four kinds of yakumi (condiments), all of which were tasty.

Da Rope-tei is a steak restaurant run directly by a ranch in Kumamoto, and it is popular for its hearty steaks grilled in a bold style.

Located near the mountaintop in Ashikita, Ashikita District, Kumamoto Prefecture, it is said to have a hideaway-like atmosphere. It is by reservation only.

One of the big draws is the wide lineup, including block grilled cuts, Aged meat, and dishes made with Shiranuhi-gyu (Shiranuhi beef).

People say the meat really brings out the natural flavor of the ingredients, and that the simple preparation lets you enjoy it as is. You can enjoy it with several different seasonings, including wasabi, salt, and two kinds of sauce.

The restaurant’s signature 1kg Tenderloin block steak is said to have little fat and a mild mouthfeel.

They season it with salt and pepper to bring out the meat’s flavor, along with a blend of several spices. It has great visual impact, and it seems best to share it among 3 to 4 people.

I had Shiranuigyu (Shiranui beef), raised directly by Tsunada Bokujou (Tsunada Farm). The style felt fresh, with Tenderloin seasoned nicely with spices and grilled on a Teppan-yaki in a whole block. It was an interesting Yakiniku restaurant in a hidden part of Kumamoto.

・Block-grilled Tenderloin
The meat is well seasoned, so it tastes great even on its own, but the two sauces served on the side are excellent too. I especially like eating it with wasabi mixed into the sweet sauce. Most impressive of all are the tenderness of the meat and the clean taste that is unique to lean cuts. It is so light that you could easily finish even 1kg.
