Izakaya in the Hachioji area! 20 picks with excellent dishes that go great with drinks

Hachioji City in Tokyo has developed as a core city of the Tama area. While the urban center is lined with offices and commercial facilities, it is also known as a tourist destination rich in nature, centered around Mount Takao. This article rounds up recommended izakaya (Japanese pubs) worth stopping by when you visit Hachioji City.

Ogawa no Sakana

Ogawa no Sakana is an izakaya known as a grown-up space lit by soft indirect lighting, where you can take your time and enjoy the food and drinks. As the name suggests, you can casually enjoy river fish sourced from the restaurant's directly operated fish farm.

Above all, the signature kotsuzake (Japanese sake with char added) made with iwana (char) is especially popular.

Iwana (char) hone-zake (Japanese sake infused with grilled fish bones) also drew reviews calling it “an absolute must for Japanese sake lovers.”

The flavor of carefully grilled iwana seeps into the Japanese sake, making it so good that you may find yourself ordering another cup.

The "Katsu Dojo no Kara-age," a dish of dojo (loach) flown in from Oita Prefecture and fried whole until crisp, bones and all.

The fresh dojo has no off notes at all, and the lightly coated batter is said to hold plenty of flavor inside.

miguelon8213

As I crunched into the salt-grilled yamame (landlocked masu salmon), known as the queen of mountain streams, and enjoyed its rich flavor all the way from the head, pairing it with iwana (char) honezake (fish bone-infused sake) was an instant knockout, and I kept ordering refills. The cost performance is excellent, and this is a great restaurant that makes me want to make the trip out to Hachioji again.

There was a Special feel to items you do not often get at other izakaya, such as loach Kara-age, freshwater fish sashimi, salt grilled freshwater fish, grilled eel liver, and eel liver soup. Japanese sake pairs with them very well!

Hachioji Kaisuke

Hachioji Kaisuke is a seafood izakaya specializing in shellfish, something rare in Hachioji, and it has become a hot topic for letting guests enjoy unusual ingredients that the owner buys directly from Toyosu Market.

The interior has the feel of a taishu sakaba (casual Japanese pub), so it is a good pick when you want to relax and enjoy yourself without feeling formal.

For shellfish lovers, the Kaisuke Sashimi assortment is hard to resist. The akagai (ark shell), with no off notes and a light sweetness, is said to be especially great.

It comes with not only shellfish but also squid and sweet shrimp, making it a highly Manzoku dish.

The uniquely named “Tsufo Tamago (gout egg)” is sure to catch your eye.

A lightly packed layer of sushi rice sits in a masu (wooden box), topped generously with a soft-boiled egg, uni (sea urchin), and ikura (salmon roe). Wrap it in nori and it is as good as you would expect.

Kaisuke Hachioji is an izakaya (Japanese pub) where you can enjoy fresh shellfish dishes and seafood. The sashimi and yakigai (grilled shellfish) have rich flavor, brought out even more by the fragrant aroma of charcoal grilling. The calm Japanese style interior and polite service add to the appeal. It is perfect for a drink after work or a meal with friends, and a must try for shellfish lovers.

A place I had wanted to visit for a long time♫Everything was delicious. The ozukuri (sashimi platter) had great freshness, of course, and the combination was nice too, with gari (pickled ginger) and wakame (seaweed) used as garnishes. The ate-maki (snack rolls) with ootoro iwashi (rich sardine) were also wrapped with vegetables, so they tasted light. The iwagaki (rock oyster) was so big that they cut it for us, and it was very filling.

I chose an appealing course centered on Nagano cuisine, with All you can drink local sake as well. I sat at the counter, and the atmosphere was very nice. Rather than the fried food heavy style common at chain places, this was a truly Japanese style restaurant with food that paired well with Japanese sake. Many of the customers were mature, so I could enjoy a relaxed drink. I was very satisfied.

The counter seats were spacious and lovely. They had many small plates that paired well with Japanese sake, and the potato salad topped with shiokara (salted seafood) and myoga (Japanese ginger), as well as the itawasa (sliced kamaboko with wasabi), were very delicious. The shrimp chawanmushi (savory egg custard) served as the appetizer was also excellent.

The sashimi served in the course was very fresh and nicely fatty, and the warayaki katsuo (straw-seared bonito), madai (Sea Bream), and buri (yellowtail) were all excellent. The madai shabu-shabu also had impressively thick slices, and the broth, filled with the good flavors of vegetables and mushrooms, was delicious too, so I enjoyed everything right through to the finishing rice porridge.

Sumibiyaki Rakuza

If you want to enjoy the popular nikumaki-kushi (meat-wrapped skewers), the Omakase skewer assortment of 5 is a great choice. It offers a nice balance of yakitori and yasai-maki-kushi (vegetable-wrapped skewers).

They slowly grill the skewers over charcoal, which lets the extra fat drip away and makes them really good.

They have a good value skewer set, and I even got an extra item, so I was very Manzoku. The juicy chicken and the crisp fried coating are said to be excellent, and a little squeeze of lemon makes it even better.

ぽっちゃん1号

I stopped in on a whim, but the motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot) here was really delicious! The motsu itself was plump and bouncy, and it had great volume with the vegetables too, so it was very satisfying. Also, the side menu Kara-age was about twice the usual size, but it was amazingly juicy and became a dish I’d definitely want to order every time I visit! I’d love to come again.

It was even better than expected! The motsu (offal) was large and plump!! I had it in the recommended miso-based broth, and it had none of that heavy sweetness, just a taste so good I felt like I could eat it forever. The other snacks were great too, especially the nankotsu Kara-age (fried chicken cartilage), which was large and tasty! It seems to be a popular place and always crowded, but I’d love to go back and eat there again!

The tempura focuses mainly on vegetables, lightly salted in advance, and it is crisp and tasty. The sashimi was so good I couldn't help blurting out, "Wow, this is good." The kanburi (winter yellowtail) in particular was so rich and fatty that it almost felt like toro. Next came a steak made with that same kanburi. The food is properly prepared, so it is not just the taste of the ingredients alone and is very good. I was able to enjoy the tasty food in a Semi-private room.

食べ道楽の食いどうらく

This izakaya is in the heart of Hachioji City's downtown area. It is also conveniently located near both the station and the bus stop. I ordered a skewer assortment and wine, and the skewers were very filling with rich flavors, so I was Manzoku. On top of that, the wine selection is extensive, which makes it perfect. I would like to visit again in the future.

Isomaru Suisan Hachioji Ten

Isomaru Suisan Hachioji Ten is a popular izakaya where you can casually enjoy authentic hamayaki (seaside-style grill dishes), including grilled squid and crab cooked in its shell.

They also offer a full lineup of à la carte dishes made with fresh seafood, including sashimi. The beach shack-like atmosphere inside also adds to the fun, they say.

The kani miso (crab tomalley) grilled in the shell looks gorgeous and pairs perfectly with Japanese sake, making it a popular menu item with many repeat customers.

The photo shows the "King Kani Miso Kora-yaki (grilled king crab tomalley in the shell)," which you grill yourself, so it feels a bit like an activity, and it is also nice that you can eat it piping hot.

The "Kaisen Chirashi Salad" is a luxurious dish of wakame (seaweed) and lettuce salad topped generously with chunky cubes of sashimi such as buri (yellowtail) and salmon.

The dressing has a nice toasted aroma, and its light taste pairs perfectly with the seafood.

The appealing hamayaki (seaside-style grilled seafood) setup lets you grill at your table and enjoy boldly flavored, exceptionally fresh seafood such as scallops, sazae (turban shells), and shrimp. There is also a wide variety of tuna dishes and seafood Rice bowls, and courses with All you can drink are reasonably priced. The interior is bright and lively, making it perfect for get-togethers with friends or a late night meal. If you want to enjoy seafood casually in Hachioji, this is one place you should not miss.

I ended up going out for drinks with a friend in Hachioji, and we visited because we wanted to eat fish! They had many different kinds of fish dishes, and every one was a Manzoku-worthy dish. They can also warm the Japanese sake on the spot, which is very comforting! If you are not sure where to go for drinks, definitely give this place a try.

Sumibi Yakitoriya Nabe to Sengyo 3H All you can eat and drink Fully private room Izakaya Gin no Utage Hachioji Ten is an izakaya with excellent access from Hachioji Station. The gyu-Horumon motsu Hot Pot (beef offal hot pot) seems like a great match for Japanese sake too, making it a perfect dish to enjoy with friends in the cold season.

People also like that you can choose from four kinds of soup: soy sauce, miso, paitan (milky white broth), and tonkotsu (pork bone broth).
