Ishikawa Prefecture is located in the Hokuriku region on the Sea of Japan side and is known for a diverse food culture rooted in rich seafood and traditional culture. This time, we have put together a list of recommended izakaya in Kanazawa, the central city of Ishikawa Prefecture. We will introduce places where you can enjoy a wide range of dishes, including seafood from the Sea of Japan and Kaga yasai (Kaga vegetables).

Shubo Shojo

Shubo Shojo is an izakaya (Japanese pub) known for its tasty sashimi selection, with fish varieties that give a real Kanazawa feel. The menu centers on Japanese cuisine, and they also offer a good selection of Japanese sake to go with the food.

With a charming storefront along the canal, the interior has counter seating as well as a koagari (raised tatami seating area).

The sashimi assortment for 3 includes fresh hotaruika (firefly squid) and gasu ebi (pink shrimp), specialties of Ishikawa Prefecture.

The sashimi assortment requires a reservation, and they purchase ingredients according to the reservation status. You can tell they take great care in sourcing and selecting their fish.

The otoshi (small appetizer) is Kanazawa cuisine called "berobero." This traditional local dish is made by setting egg with kanten (agar), and it is an essential part of New Year dishes and celebratory meals in Kanazawa.

The dashi broth comes through nicely, and the egg seems to melt smoothly in your mouth as its rich flavor spreads across your palate.

I had been curious about this place for a while, and I finally got a reservation, so this was my first visit. Kanazawa specialties were all here, and the seafood in particular was outstanding. Reserving the sashimi assortment in advance was absolutely the right call!! And as for the Japanese sake I came for, I started with it chilled and enjoyed all the rest as Kanzake! If I had to pick one, the goroika (small whole squid) was the best match with Kanzake.

猿君

The sashimi features about eight kinds of seafood from the Hokuriku (Hokuriku region) coast. This sashimi assortment is absolutely outstanding. The aka-ika (red squid) was great, and the marinated swordfish was also excellent. The whelk was as fresh as it gets, and the mayoigatsuo (early-season bonito from the Sea of Japan) was delicious too. Every piece of sashimi was at a very high level, and without exaggeration, it was the best sashimi assortment I have ever had.

Genzaemon Kikuramachi Ten

Genzaemon Kikuramachi Ten is an izakaya where you can enjoy Kanazawa local cuisine, including local fish sashimi, nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) grilled with salt, and kamo no jibuni (duck stew in Kanazawa style).

They also offer a wide selection of Japanese sake, mainly local sake from Ishikawa Prefecture, so it is a great pick for people who enjoy drinking. On the first floor, there are counter and table seats, and on the second floor, there are table seats and Private rooms.

The traditional Kanazawa dish kamo jibuni (duck stew) that has been passed down since the Edo period is said to be popular for its tender, tasty duck. The aroma of wasabi is said to add a nice accent.

The duck is simmered after being coated with flour, which gives the dashi broth a thick texture.

They have a wide selection of Japanese sake, with about 30 kinds of local sake from Ishikawa Prefecture such as Kagatobi, Manzairaku Hakusan, and Kikuhime. You can also do a tasting comparison of the local sake.

It is also said to be fun to chat with the master at the counter about local sake.

kubom953

The sashimi assortment was great, with a nice variety of seasonal fish to enjoy. They also have a full range of Kanazawa local dishes, so I think it is perfect for tourists. They also offer many recommended nama-zake (unpasteurized sake) options, so it was nice to have fun comparing different Japanese sake while deciding what to try.

まさはるキー

If you go here, you can enjoy all of Kanazawa's best food,旬の魚, and local sake. If you sit at the counter, conversation with the itamae (chef) really flows♪They told us about local dishes and local sake you can only find here, such as jibuni (duck stew) and fugu (blowfish) ovaries, as well as Tedorigawa no Arabashiri.

Yakitori Gekijo Tabidori Urakatamachi Ten

Yakitori Gekijo Tabidori Urakatamachi Ten is an izakaya where you can enjoy jidori (local chicken) from around Japan, including the once legendary "Amakusa Daio (large native chicken breed)" said to have been revived in recent years in Kumamoto Prefecture and "Awaodori (Tokushima local chicken)" from Tokushima Prefecture.

You can also take your time enjoying dishes such as grilled vegetables made with local Kaga Yasai (Kaga vegetables) from Ishikawa Prefecture at the counter or Sunken kotatsu seating.

The popular "jidori (local chicken) Chicken sashimi (served raw) 4-kind assortment" is served with low-temperature cooking or yubiki (light parboiling), and includes jidori liver, gizzard, breast, and tenderloin.

The Special selected jidori is full of flavor, and the liver is said to melt in your mouth. Sauce is served in the container at the center of the plate, with egg yolk and nori (seaweed) on a separate plate.

For the yakitori, everything except the liver is served simply with salt. The photo shows a tasting comparison of three kinds of jidori (local chicken) thigh meat from different production regions. The thigh meat grilled over binchotan (high-grade white charcoal) is fragrant and juicy.

Thigh meat is a cut that tends to show the character of jidori clearly, so it is said to be perfect for comparing different kinds.

ターリブ

Just as the staff explained the menu in detail, everything we ate was really delicious! The limited yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) in particular was almost sold out, so we ordered it right away, and it was definitely great. Also, the limited Rice bowl was...the best!

Source:ターリブ's review

The atmosphere was really nice! I could watch the dishes being finished right in front of me, and many of the staff were cheerful and friendly, so I had a great time eating and drinking! If you tell them what kind of drinks you like, they’ll explain things like, "We have this limited one in right now, and I recommend it," so I highly recommend this place even for people who are new to alcohol!

When I asked for a simmered fish dish, the staff hesitated a bit but served me an amazing hatahata (sailfin sandfish) nimono (simmered dish). It had a clear ginger flavor while still bringing out the rich taste of the fish. It was my first time having hatahata this good! Since I was there, I also had a sashimi platter of fresh fish, and it looked beautiful too, and tasted great! The vegetable tempura was crisp on the outside and tender inside, and it went perfectly with the drinks.

syachiku-syatiku

I went for nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), but the sawara (Spanish mackerel) was insanely good! The 7-item assortment was all delicious too! They also had a wide selection of local sake, and I was very satisfied! I had made a reservation, so I was also happy that I could eat upstairs on the 2nd floor in a roomy, relaxed space!

Suigyo

Suigyo is an izakaya located in a great spot just a 1-minute walk from Kanazawa Station. Its Japanese modern interior includes Private rooms designed as calm spaces with walls in the traditional Kaga bengara (red iron oxide pigment) color.

For food, you can enjoy fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan delivered directly from fishing ports, and they also offer a wide selection of local Hokuriku sake.

It is popular for the generous set of three small otoshi (appetizer) dishes served first.

The otoshi in the photo were shime-saba (vinegared mackerel), bukkake soba, and a dressed dish of chicken tenderloin and Chinese jellyfish, and they were quite satisfying. They sometimes also serve hotaru-ika (firefly squid) and shirasu (whitebait).

The nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) whole grilled fish is said to have crisp, fragrant skin, while the rich, fatty flesh is light and juicy. It has the kind of presence you would expect from a premium fish from Hokuriku, and the salt is said to bring out the flavor of the fish.

People say each bite is absolutely delicious, and some even mentioned finishing it carefully right down to the meat around the bones.

crams1111

Even the otoshi (small appetizer) was lavish. It was quiet on a weekday night, which made me a little worried, but overall the portions were large, the food tasted great, and I was very satisfied. We ordered the sashimi assortment for two, and it was especially impressive, with about six slices of each kind. It was very good.

imiloa

You can do a tasting comparison of famous Japanese sake from Ishikawa! It is irresistible for Japanese sake lovers! You can also casually enjoy Hokuriku flavors like nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), bai-gai (whelk), and white shrimp. The grilled nodoguro with salt was great, and the white shrimp Kara-age was excellent.

All seats are in fully private rooms at izakaya (Japanese pub) Wa no Oto Kanazawa Ekimae Ten

Zenseki Kanzen Koshitsu Izakaya Wa no Oto Kanazawa Ekimae Ten is an izakaya where every seat is in a fully private room, with spacious Japanese-style rooms divided by shoji (paper sliding screens), a traditional Japanese fixture, so you can relax and enjoy the food and drinks.

The menu mainly features seasonal seafood delivered fresh daily from the fishing port, and the yasai-maki (vegetable-wrapped skewers) made by wrapping vegetables in meat is also a house specialty.

The signature dish, "Shifuku no Kaisen-don Parfait (blissful seafood Rice bowl parfait)," has sea urchin and ikura (salmon roe) on the left, and salmon and ikura on the right. There is rice at the very bottom.

The harmony of different layers of seafood melts together in your mouth, bringing a blissful bite every time. One comment even called it a "jewel box of the sea."

"Yasai-maki (vegetable rolls)," made by wrapping a range of vegetables in pork belly or bacon and grilling them, lets you enjoy fresh vegetables such as crisp lettuce, crunchy renkon (lotus root), and sticky okra together with the rich flavor of the meat.

They are healthy, while still giving a solid sense of Manzoku.

ゆうかまる

The lighting inside is calm, and the Private room adds a sense of privacy that makes it easy to talk. I took my time enjoying the food, and now and then the staff’s polite service made me feel at ease. It was a night when I enjoyed three different kinds of great flavors: fresh fish, vegetable rolls, and tempura.

Source:ゆうかまる's review

The festive parfait-style dish topped with salmon and ikura (salmon roe), along with the sea urchin and ikura Rice bowl, looks gorgeous and really lifts your mood. I also fully enjoyed Hokuriku-style seafood, like hotaruika (firefly squid) okizuke (soy-marinated) and the crab and sea urchin Rice bowl, and left very Manzoku. Just as the reviews said, each dish was carefully made, and I got to enjoy the rich flavors that feel so Kanazawa.

Kanazawa Tamura

Kanazawa Tamura is an izakaya where you can enjoy kani (crab), a winter specialty, all year round. It is located a 2-minute walk from Higashi Chaya-gai (Higashi Teahouse District), which still preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period.

Besides kani, you can also enjoy fresh seasonal seafood from Hokuriku in dishes such as sashimi, grilled items, and Hot Pot. They also have Private rooms available for groups of 3 or more.

When you order one whole zuwaigani (snow crab), they show you the crab before cooking it. After that, you can enjoy it as boiled crab, sashimi-style crab legs, and more.

As you might expect, live crab is said to be completely different in both texture and taste. Male zuwaigani landed in Ishikawa Prefecture are known for being especially good and are sold under the brand name Kano Gani.

The signature dish is buri (yellowtail) thick sushi roll. It has more buri than rice, and it is also a perfect match for drinks.

They are also particular about the temperature of both the shari (vinegared sushi rice) and the topping so that it does not feel cold when you take a bite.

mamochin

I ordered a course featuring kano-gani (snow crab from Ishikawa). It was a full parade of crab dishes, including crab sashimi, boiled crab, pressed crab sushi, and crab cream croquettes. The udon at the end left me feeling Manpuku. I fully enjoyed Kanazawa’s winter flavors and was left very Manzoku! I’d love to visit again next season.

The buri (yellowtail) roll recommended by the owner was very good. I had thought buri would be fatty and have a fishy taste, but it had none of that at all, and it was excellent! I’d definitely recommend trying it! The nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) grilled with salt was also rich and tasty!

At this restaurant, you can also enjoy nodoguro shabu-shabu and salt-grilled nodoguro.

おっさん28号

We first ordered Kanazawa oden (Kanazawa-style oden) and a sashimi assortment. The oden had a rich dashi flavor and tasted great! The fu (wheat gluten), which I had been especially looking forward to, was soaked with broth and was excellent. The sashimi was also very good, just what you would expect from Hokuriku (the Hokuriku region). Overall, it was a nice place near the station where you could really enjoy Ishikawa (Ishikawa Prefecture).

柳暗

The oden has a gentle flavored dashi broth that kuruma-fu (wheat gluten cake) and daikon radish soak up fully, letting the umami spread through your mouth. It is also nice that it is filling enough to make a full dinner with just this and a drink. The sashimi was all fresh, with no off notes. The richly fatty swordfish, plump shrimp, and refined, deeply flavorful Sea Bream... I was very satisfied with every piece of sashimi.

I had the specialty kobore-zushi (overflowing sushi) and Kimi no Tsunagaritai, and the fish was so fresh and just plain delicious. Food: Everything is good, from sashimi made with local fish to fried dishes and specialty plates. Atmosphere: Although it is in a busy downtown area, the restaurant feels calm. I got the sense that it is a place locals come to. The manager seems quiet, but he shared all kinds of information and made the atmosphere pleasant. Service: The service was polite, and I had no complaints at all.

I went there for the Japanese sake. They had many dry varieties I like, and I was very satisfied. While it is in a location where you can casually stop by on your way back from sightseeing or a business trip, the quality of the food is seriously authentic across the board. As the name suggests, meat and oden (Japanese hot pot dishes) are the stars, but what was truly surprising on an actual visit was the high level of the sashimi and fried dishes. The fresh seafood sashimi had firm texture and a nice sweetness that spread across the palate.

The otoshi (small appetizer) is quite lavish. Since they said they could do an assorted sashimi platter, I ordered that. JPY1700. Beautiful! Unlike Kanto-style oden, some reviews say the broth is light and has a gentle taste.

I thought it would be just a regular izakaya (Japanese pub), but maybe because this is Kanazawa, the sashimi was very good! I could also try Kanazawa's local specialty oden (Japanese hot pot dish), so it worked well as a sightseeing meal too, and I was very Manzoku. They also stock a wide range of local sake from Ishikawa, so I think people who enjoy drinking will be more than satisfied.

The "Hakata Aburi Motsu-nabe" with the offal seared with a burner is also said to be fragrant and tasty.

The "three horse meat assortment" is served on a plate shaped like Kyushu (the Kyushu region). The horse meat has no strong distinctive flavor and is tender, and pairing it with ginger brings out its umami even more.

They also offer four-item and five-item assortments, as well as A la carte basashi (horse sashimi).

天真爛漫0001

This is a Kyushu cuisine restaurant, but since it is located in Kanazawa, it had a nice mix of Kyushu dishes made with local ingredients and local menu items arranged in a Kyushu style. The sashimi also included fresh fish sourced in Kanazawa, and there were different ways to enjoy it, such as eating it with Kyushu soy sauce, so I had a very tasty meal.

This is my favorite motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot) place that never misses. Also, the dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelet) is exactly my kind of flavor, so I order it every single time. It may not be a Kanazawa specialty, but this is a sure bet in Kanazawa. There are Private room and table seats, and it seems the seating goes up to the third floor, so it's easy to visit even on weekends.

Robata to Oden Koronagirai Kanazawa Ekimae Ten

Robata to Oden Koronagirai Kanazawa Ekimae Ten is an izakaya in a convenient location just a 2-minute walk from JR Kanazawa Station, where you can enjoy All you can eat Kanazawa oden (Kanazawa-style oden), a specialty of Ishikawa Prefecture.

They also offer a wide range of seafood dishes that let you enjoy the flavors of Hokuriku (Japan’s north-central coast), as well as courses that include All you can drink.

The otoshi (small appetizer) is an oden assortment. After that, the oden is All you can eat, and you can go to the yatai (food stall) in the photo yourself and order whichever oden items you like.

There is a wide variety of oden, including the most popular daikon radish and eggs, as well as kuruma-fu (wheat gluten rounds), a Kanazawa specialty.

Besides oden, you can also enjoy Kanazawa-style seafood dishes such as sashimi and robatayaki (fireside grilling).

The "Ginzake no Ikura Oroshi Gake" in the photo is a rich dish of grilled coho salmon topped with plenty of ikura (salmon roe) and grated daikon radish.

The first otoshi (small appetizer) is an "oden assortment." And you can get free refills✨The staff picks the first round, but once you finish and bring your dish to the stall, you can choose whichever ingredients you like! If you’re visiting, the Kanazawa specialty items "akamaki (red fish cake roll)" and "kurumafu (wheel-shaped wheat gluten)" are must-tries, and the daikon radish is cut thick yet soaked through all the way to the center.

The atmosphere is nice, and the staff are friendly and polite. The service runs smoothly, and the place feels very comfortable. Even so, there is no doubt that this is the kind of spot that makes you want to come back! Close to Kanazawa Station, this izakaya (Japanese pub) is also perfect when you want to stop in for a quick drink after sightseeing.

Taishu Sakaba Yoidore Kanazawa Ekimae Ten

Taishu Sakaba Yoidore Kanazawa Ekimae Ten is a casual izakaya located about a 3-minute walk from Kanazawa Station, with three signature specialties: hone-tsuki dori no ippon-yaki (whole roasted bone-in chicken leg), hane hitokuchi gyoza (crispy bite-size gyoza), and tejikomi shumai (house-made shumai).

There are three courses that come with 2 hours of All you can drink. Inside, the restaurant has table seating and Private rooms with Sunken kotatsu seating.

The house specialty, hane-hitokuchi gyoza (winged bite size dumplings), is popular for its crisp pan-fried skin and juicy filling that go great together.

They say the seasoning is strong enough that you can eat them without adding anything. Besides these, the restaurant offers more than 10 kinds of gyoza alone.

These are some of the dishes served in a course with All you can drink. In the front of the photo is "Kani ankake (crab thick sauce) dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet with dashi)", and to its right is "Gokujo salmon rare katsu (premium lightly fried salmon cutlet)".

A review says that every dish was a hit and the drinks were good too.

ようへい食べ歩き

We were shown to a Private room with a TV, so we could relax and enjoy our food and drinks while watching TV. We ordered their specialty, hanetsuki gyoza (pan-fried dumplings with crispy wings)! They were nicely browned, with crisp wrappers and juicy filling packed with meat juices, and they tasted great! They also brought our drinks right after we ordered, and everything was cheap and good! It was a place that made us want to come back again.

Because I reserved in advance, they showed us to our table smoothly. Since it was a Private room, we could relax and take our time. I was Surprising to see my favorite highball was JPY99. It was a great price. We ordered by barcode. The food came relatively quickly. We enjoyed it, and it was nice.

Kuimono-ya Wan Kanazawa Ekimae Ten

"Kuimono-ya Wan Kanazawa Ekimae Ten" is an izakaya in a convenient location, just a 4-minute walk from Kanazawa Station, where you can enjoy creative dishes based on Japanese cuisine.

They offer courses with All you can drink, featuring seasonal menus that change throughout the year, including sashimi and Hot Pot. The restaurant has Private room options with Sunken kotatsu seating available for groups of 2 or more, making it a good choice when you want to relax and enjoy a drink.

The “Jikasei Tsukune-iri Sankai Chanko Hot Pot” is a Hot Pot filled with homemade tsukune (chicken meatballs) as the main ingredient along with a variety of other items. On this day, it also came with gyoza (dumplings).

They also serve the “Hakata-fu Menta Toro Hot Pot,” a Hot Pot made with mentaiko (spicy cod roe) and grated yam.

The most popular item at this restaurant is the "tezukuri torori chizu tsukune (handmade melty cheese chicken meatball)," a chicken tsukune with cartilage mixed in and cheese wrapped inside. Hot cheese melts out from the center, and it is said to taste great.

The chicken Kara-age, flavored with a strong garlic sauce, is also popular.

It was a JPY4,000 All you can drink course. The meal covered the basics, with no sashimi (sliced raw fish), and instead came with salmon carpaccio. Also, the Hot Pot was a tsumire (fish ball) and gyoza dumpling Hot Pot. The food was decent overall. These days, it is nice that the All you can drink menu includes draft beer at no extra charge, which really showed what a chain restaurant does best.

らじお

After that, we ordered a rush of standard izakaya dishes. These days, a lot of places have you scan a 2D code at your table, so it is convenient to just tap in your order. The beer comes icy cold in a pottery cup, so it stays cold and tasty all the way until you finish your pint glass. The food is from a chain, but it is reliably good, and when you are not sure where to go, a familiar place is probably best.
