Yamagata Prefecture: Great Yakiniku restaurants in the Yamagata and Kaminoyama area
Photograph:しんたみき
Osama no Yakiniku Kuronuma Yamagata Nishiko-mae Ten, about a 6-minute drive from Yamagata Station, is a Yakiniku restaurant where you can casually enjoy Domestic beef supplied directly by Kuronuma Chikusan, a butcher shop founded in 1948.
The interior has a modern Japanese feel, and there are Private room-style seats separated by noren (traditional fabric dividers), so you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed setting.
Photograph:リコスケ
The signature "Osama-mori (King assortment)" is an assortment that lets you enjoy Osama no karubi (King short rib), Strip loin, Outside skirt, and salted tongue all at once.
The Strip loin and short rib have a moderate amount of marbling and are said to be tender with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Along with the high quality of the meat, some reviews also mention the solid portion size.
Photograph:しんたみき
The "Aburi Beef Sushi 3-Type Set" is a set where you can enjoy three kinds: aburi beef sushi, aburi Beef Tongue sushi, and aburi Yamagata-gyu (Yamagata beef) sushi.
After you order, they sear it right in front of you with a burner, so you also get to enjoy the live performance. The aburi meat sushi can also be ordered from just 1 piece.
AN様
I visited because I wanted to eat Yamagata gyu (Yamagata beef). There were two Yamagata gyu menu items: Yamagata gyu king kalbi and aburi Yamagata gyu sushi. I ordered them along with Domestic beef toro kalbi. The king kalbi had beautiful marbling and tasted great.

I could really tell that everything about the meat, from its tenderness to its thickness, was carefully thought out so it would taste great in your mouth. The meat in the course was not enough, so I also ordered extra niku-zushi (meat sushi), and that was melt-in-your-mouth good too. They seared it with a burner right in front of me, which made it fun and added to the live feel♪

This is the "meat cake" served as part of the "Special occasion course." It comes with a sparkler, giving it strong visual impact.
It is often chosen for Special scenes such as birthdays and other celebrations.
やまがたまる
The kimchi assortment we ordered first was surprisingly good, and it really caught us off guard. The garlic chive kimchi in particular was so tasty it felt like we could eat a whole bowl of rice with that alone. The meat was also great, especially the kalbi and beef Tenderloin, which were tender and had really good fat, making it a nice lunch.

The JPY5000 Osama Course + All you can drink comes with good quality meat, salad, a mini kuppa (Korean rice soup) or cold noodles, and even ice cream, so it is very filling. They also added a birthday sparkler to the meat as a service and took a commemorative photo for us.

This is the Yonezawa-gyu (Yonezawa beef) thick-cut premium salted tongue served at dinner time. Its beautiful appearance stands out, with fine marbling throughout.
Even though it is thick-cut, it is easy to bite through and has a pleasantly springy texture.

The lunch only "Minamicho Roast Beef Rice bowl" turns the restaurant's popular "Minamicho Roast Beef" into a Rice bowl.
The meat uses Yamagata-gyu (Yamagata beef), carefully selected by the owner. The thinly sliced roast beef has a texture that goes well with the rice, and lets you really taste the flavor of the meat.

The staff were also very kind. The food was great too, and I really enjoyed not only the Yamagata-gyu (Yamagata beef) but also the reasonably priced meat.

It’s a little hard to get to, but this is great yakiniku (Japanese grilled meat) in Yamagata! I liked that there were lots of different ways to enjoy it. The portions are pretty filling too, so you’ll leave full. It was less crowded than I expected, and the staff helped us right away, so we had a great time! I’ll definitely go again!

The highly recommended menu item, "Atsugiri Jo Tan Shio (thick cut premium salted beef tongue)," is made using only the tender root portion of the tongue.

The lemon sour and highball are self serve, and you can adjust the strength to your liking. The style of pouring your own drink feels fresh, and another nice point is the short wait time.

At this restaurant, the owner, who knows Yakiniku well, mainly serves Yamagata-gyu (Yamagata beef) that he has carefully selected.
One of the top recommendations is the "Yamagata-gyu Chateaubriand," known for its melt-in-your-mouth texture. It has a great balance of lean meat flavor and high-quality fat, and many people pair it with wine.

The "Yamagata-gyu (Yamagata beef) Premium Assortment Lunch 150g" is a lunch set that lets you compare filet, Special tongue, and Special cuts. It comes with a well-balanced assortment of lean cuts and richer marbled meat.
The main meat platter comes with labels explaining (Each) cut, which guests say makes it easy to understand even for Yakiniku beginners.

I was blown away by how good everything was, from the rare cuts to the tongue and filet, all tasting like something you do not usually get to have. More than anything, the menu was packed with appetizers, sides, noodles, curry, and more! I had a hard time choosing, but the kimpab (Korean rice rolls) and namul (seasoned vegetable side dishes) were so delicious that I strongly recommended them to my group.

休日料理人
Shinshin (top round cap) is the kind of cut that makes the appeal of lean meat easy to understand, with more sweetness from the meat coming out the more you chew. Rather than flashy marbling, it brings out the character of the meat itself, so it resets your palate and makes you want the next slice. The filet has a fine grain and a refined tenderness that gently falls apart. The Special tongue is thick, so it shows its best when the outside is nicely browned and the inside stays plump.

When you think of Yonezawa (a city in Yamagata Prefecture), you think of Yonezawa beef! So we visited at the end of our trip. There was also a butcher shop on the first floor. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Yonezawa Beef Tongue, Outside skirt, kalbi (Korean-style short ribs), and lightly grilled shabu-shabu style loin. As expected from Yonezawa beef, the fat was juicy, and the more we chewed, the more sweetness came out. It was really delicious!

Izakaya Aburichaya, a 1-minute walk from Tsuruoka Station, is an izakaya known for its charcoal grilled dishes made with Shonai (area in Yamagata) ingredients. Along with grilled Shonai pork, Yamagata jidori (local chicken breed from Yamagata), and prefecture-produced beef, they also offer Horumon and seafood.

By grilling it slowly over charcoal, it turns nicely browned on the outside while staying moist inside. The sweetness of the special Yakiniku sauce brings out the meat's rich flavor.
In addition to sumibiyaki (charcoal grilling), the restaurant also offers izakaya-style dishes like sashimi and fried items.
The photo shows hirame (olive flounder) ozukuri (sashimi-style slices). Hirame, which is in season in winter, has firm, springy flesh and a gentle sweetness.

We ordered the Tarafuku assortment. The beef and pork were enough for two people to enjoy to the fullest, and it also seems like 3 or 4 people could share it and still have a good time. One thing that makes this place stand out is that you can enjoy not only Yakiniku but also grilled seafood. The freshly grilled shelled hotate (scallop) with butter was very delicious.

A Yakiniku restaurant specializing in pork. Since it is run by Hirata Bokujyo, the meat is really delicious!! The side dishes are also high quality (I especially liked the 4-kind namul assortment), and I was happy that the rice was Tsuyahime ❤️They served the drinks from the All you can drink menu right away, and cleared empty plates quickly too. I ordered a tasting set to compare Kinka-ton (Kinka pork) and sangen-ton (three-breed pork). Both were really good, but I personally preferred Kinka-ton. I think the flavor is every bit as good as beef. The fat felt clean and not greasy, and the more I chewed, the more flavor came through. If you think Yakiniku means beef, I recommend enjoying pork once in a while too.
