Recommended yakitori restaurants in the Kawaramachi, Kiyamachi, and Pontocho areas of Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture
This yakitori restaurant is a 5-minute walk from Shijo Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway. It has a sister restaurant in Gion (Kyoto's historic geisha district).
The restaurant has counter seats only. The interior has the warmth of wood and a hideaway atmosphere.

The menu at this restaurant has only one option, the "Omakase course." It is a full lineup that includes yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), vegetable skewers, Appetizers, rice, and even dessert.
Every dish is said to be seasoned in a refined way that brings out the best in the ingredients.

Each yakitori (grilled chicken skewer) is carefully grilled one by one and has the beauty of a work of art. They use jidori (free-range chicken) from Kyoto, which is said to have a very good balance of texture and rich flavor.
There were also many reviews saying that the charcoal-grilled Kameoka "Nanatani-gamo (Nanatani duck)" is excellent.
ゆうきyuuki
The style here is to carefully grill Kyoto jidori (local Kyoto chicken) and seasonal Kyo-yasai (Kyoto vegetables) in a new kiln and over charcoal, using minimal seasoning to bring out as much of the ingredients’ natural flavor as possible. The steamed chicken is made rich and mellow with thick egg yolk, while the chicken wings stuffed with shark fin and the charcoal-grilled duck are simply outstanding.

The main dish is duck! I had been so curious about the duck slowly roasting over the firewood in the back, visible from the open kitchen. I kept waiting for it, and after being taken out and put back in again and again, the duck, carefully cooked over time, was tender, packed with flavor, and delicious. The duck topped with foie gras and a little moromi miso (fermented soybean paste) was delicious

This restaurant is a 3-minute walk from Hankyu Karasuma Station and is known for serving reasonably priced, delicious yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). Their new style of slowly grilling chicken delivered directly from Kyoto’s Nishiki Market on a stone has been getting a lot of attention.
Inside, in addition to counter and table seating, they also have a Private room that can fit a small group. The warm lighting gives the place a cozy atmosphere.
The restaurant’s yakitori is served in a "skewerless" tori-Yakiniku (chicken barbecue) style. It is slowly grilled on a Special stone said to have the world’s best far-infrared effect, which gives it a plump and juicy finish.
It’s nice that you can grill the yakitori yourself, isn’t it?
Photograph:yukio1925
The assortment menu featuring various cuts of Daisen-dori (Daisen chicken) from Tottori Prefecture is popular.
You can also choose the limited quantity assortment of Tanba jidori (Tanba local chicken) from Hyogo Prefecture, as well as sashimi and yukhoe made with Yusui-dori (Yusui chicken) from Kagoshima Prefecture.
The jidori (free-range chicken) was tender and delicious, and because I had always imagined it would be like the chicken I ate at home, it completely changed my idea of it! Since the style is to grill it on a Teppan-yaki griddle (Each), it's great that you can eat piping hot chicken whenever you like.

The service feels very good, and the chicken Yakiniku also has nice contrast in flavor depending on the cut. It is cooked on a Special stone with a far infrared effect, so it comes out moist. It is great to slowly grill it at your own pace and enjoy the meal while talking and chatting. The prices are reasonable too, and I would definitely love to visit again.

The chicken used at this restaurant is female Kyoaka Jidori (Kyoto local chicken) from Kyoto. It is known for its pleasant firmness and rich umami.
The yakitori, grilled over Domestic binchotan (high-grade charcoal), pairs well with French Guerande shio (Guerande salt), which has a mild flavor.
Photograph:sieri10
The sezeri-yaki (grilled chicken neck) and momo-yaki (grilled chicken thigh) seared chicken dishes are popular. With every bite, the rich flavor of the chicken is said to burst out.
They are seasoned on the bold side, and some reviews say the drinks just keep flowing.

The charcoal grilled chicken is just so good!! The small side dishes all pair perfectly with drinks too. I almost regret going when I wasn’t that hungry, haha. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere and was packed with customers. I definitely recommend making a reservation. I want to go again. Anyway, the charcoal grill and beer are the best!

This restaurant serves carefully prepared yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) cooked over Kishu binchotan (high-grade white charcoal from Kishu). It is a 3-minute walk from Hankyu Karasuma Station.
The interior has counter seating only, making it a good choice when you want to enjoy a relaxed meal.

The restaurant uses an Omakase stop system. It is nice that you can stop the order at any time you like.
The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) scented with binchotan (Japanese white charcoal) pairs perfectly with seasoning matched to each ingredient, such as salt or tare sauce.
Photograph:yoshi157638
Between the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), they also serve grilled vegetable skewers in a nice balance. The heat brings out the vegetables' natural sweetness, and they pair perfectly with Japanese sake.
One review also said that after the order stop, you can add more of your favorite skewers.
呑兵衛放浪記
I was impressed by how skillfully the young chef handled the charcoal fire, carefully adjusting the heat for each cut. The momo-niku (thigh meat), rich with fat, had a nice smoky aroma, while the sasami (chicken tenderloin) was cooked to keep its juiciness, and even the attention to how each skewer was prepared was flawless. Paired with sake from Kyoto, with its clear aroma and clean, firm umami, the lingering flavor of the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) grew even deeper, and the local climate and culture elevated the meal even more.

This yakitori restaurant serves skewers one by one until you say stop. Everything that comes out is impressive. The flavor from the binchotan (high-grade charcoal) grilling on each skewer is on a completely different level from ordinary yakitori places. Not just the yakitori, but also the atsuage (deep-fried tofu), shishito peppers, and shiitake mushrooms have an outstanding binchotan aroma. After saying stop, you can also order extra yakitori skewers you still want to eat.

This yakitori restaurant is in the Kawaramachi area, with convenient access to department stores and Nishiki Ichiba (Nishiki Market). The hideaway-like interior is fully equipped with Sunken kotatsu seating, tatami seating, and Semi-private room.
There are several sister locations in Kyoto City.

The restaurant’s yakitori uses Kyo Nanatani Akajidori (Kyoto red chicken from the Kyo Nanatani area) from Kyoto. Grilled over top grade binchotan (high quality charcoal), it offers two textures: crispy on the outside and juicy inside.
There were also many reviews saying that the sauce, aged for over 35 years, and the salt both pair perfectly with the chicken.
Dishes made with carefully selected vegetables from Kamigamo, Kyoto and other parts of Japan are also popular. The photo shows the “jagaimo (potato) no paripari salad.”
The dressing, made by blending more than 10 ingredients, is said to be a perfect match with the pineapple’s tartness and sweetness.

I ordered and tried the recommended five-skewer assortment. There were lots of kushiyaki (grilled skewers) I liked, and every one was delicious. They also had dishes like dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelet) and chicken nanban, so I could enjoy a variety of food and have a comfortable time. It is a very popular restaurant, so I recommend making a reservation before you go.

This yakitori restaurant is a 2-minute walk from Karasuma Station on the Hankyu Line and Shijo Station on the subway. Since it is close to the stations, it is also a good choice for a Quick Drink.
Inside, the lighting brings to mind a starry sky, and there are dreamy objects that create a grown-up atmosphere.
At this restaurant, you can enjoy yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) made with Domestic chicken, including young chicken and Kyo Hine-dori (Kyoto mature chicken). They source their chicken through their own channels, which is part of the appeal since you can also try rare cuts.
The yakitori, scented with charcoal smoke, is said to be an excellent dish that lets you fully enjoy the natural flavor of the ingredients.

As soon as you walk in, the grill catches your eye, and it really builds your anticipation for the sumibiyaki yakitori (charcoal-grilled chicken skewers) cooked so well here as you place your order. The nice smoky aroma of the charcoal wraps around the yakitori and makes it really tasty. I also ordered a salad and a few other à la carte dishes, and they were good too. It was my first time trying fried cucumber, and this was Nakanaka good as well.

It was my first time trying lightly seared ostrich thigh! It was light, and maybe because it was charcoal grilled, it had no off notes at all and tasted great. The skewers also ranged from the classics to unusual picks, and they had tsunagi (part connecting the heart and liver) and gin-kawa (silver skin), plus furisode (shoulder meat) and harami (skirt steak), which are rare for chicken, and both were really good!

The restaurant's yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) is grilled over Tosa binchotan (high-grade Japanese charcoal). Their secret tare (sauce) uses special soy sauce brought in from Shikoku.
The combination of the rich charcoal aroma and the deep flavor of the sauce is so good that you'll want to keep eating skewer after skewer.
The photo shows the popular menu item “torotoro kimo-ni (simmered liver).” It has no off notes at all, and the texture of the liver, simmered until tender, is said to be irresistible.
There were also reviews saying that the a la carte dishes made with vegetables shipped directly from farmers are high quality.
kentykenty31
All of the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) were delicious. It was probably my first time trying tosaka (chicken comb), and I really liked the texture! More than anything, the simmered liver was outstanding, with a richness that was almost like a solid liver pâté! The agedashi dofu (fried tofu in broth) soaked in chicken soup was also outstanding! I want to go back and eat there again.

It was a restaurant with a really nice atmosphere. We ate until we were full, and it came to a little under 5,000円. The liver and gizzard were especially good. The chawanmushi (savory egg custard) served as the second dish had cheese in it. I guess that reflects their collaboration with Italian cuisine. It went very well with the dashi and egg, and it was very good. The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and the meat were both Manzoku in both the level of doneness and the flavor. The soba and ochazuke (rice with tea or broth) at the end were also excellent. I would definitely like to come back again.

The reservation-only yakitori course starts with Appetizers of Hinaijidori (Hinai chicken) breast. The gizzard pieces are large, and the mid-course comparison of jidori (local chicken) features Hinaijidori and Kawamata Shamo (Kawamata gamefowl). Kawamata Shamo was also tasty, but the springy texture and juices of Hinaijidori were really impressive. The salt, mustard, and other seasonings are also Special, and many reviews say the seasoning is a perfect match for each cut.

Chicken dishes other than yakitori, such as "tori soba (chicken soba noodles)" and "tori zosui (chicken rice porridge)," are also popular. In particular, the tori soba is said to have an excellent soup rich with chicken stock.
You can order a la carte, but if you want to try a variety of dishes, a course meal is recommended.

First is the sunagimo (gizzard), with garlic tucked between the large pieces, and it is absolutely great. Next is the tori rebaa pate (chicken liver pate), and the rich liver flavor goes perfectly with white wine, so you could drink it forever. Last, to finish, there is tori soba (chicken soba), and it really hits the spot. The gentle soup lets you really taste the chicken, making it the perfect way to end the meal.

The limited-quantity shiro reba (white liver) is rich and melt-in-your-mouth, and honestly outstanding. It is one dish you will definitely want to try when you visit. The ajillo I had for the first time was also so good〜! The owner is always cheerful and kind, so I love this place for the atmosphere too. I will visit again when I come to Kyoto〜

A yakitori restaurant located a 5-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station. In addition to yakitori, it also has a full lineup of a la carte dishes.
The interior has a modern design and looks very stylish. The spacing between seats is wide, so it is a good choice when you want to enjoy a relaxed meal.
At this restaurant, you can enjoy yakitori made with freshly butchered Kyo Aka Jidori (Kyoto red local chicken). The yakitori, prepared with great care in both skewering and grilling, is said to have an irresistible juicy texture.
The popular item is the “Jidori Yakitori Omakase Assortment,” which lets you compare the flavors with salt and tare sauce.

The "jidori (local chicken) tataki (lightly seared chicken)" in the photo uses "Inakadori (country chicken) Wakazama," prepared with the "sotohagi" method, in which the internal organs are never touched before the meat is removed.
The combination of chicken with just the right amount of fat and the fragrant, lightly charred skin is said to be perfect as a snack with drinks.

The tofu served as an otoshi (small appetizer) was sweet and very tasty. They said it was Kitayama no Koi Tofu. We ordered about nine items from the à la carte menu. Each grilled vegetable was seasoned differently and was nice and satisfying. The boiled dumplings made with cloudy chicken soup were also delicious. The yakitori sauce had a clean taste. Everything we had was good, and we left Manzoku.

I was blown away by how good even the otoshi (small appetizer), steamed chicken, was. I spotted sekimo (kidney area) on the yakitori menu, one of my favorite cuts, and ordered it right away. The grilling and seasoning were so irresistibly tasty that I got another order♪ I ordered the dashimaki (Japanese rolled omelet) without really checking the dish name, and the tororo (grated yam) added a nice touch. The mild dashi flavor went perfectly with the jiggly egg◎

This yakitori chain has locations across Japan. It is a 2-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station on (Each) line.
The cozy, homey interior is just right when you want to enjoy yakitori in a casual setting.

The Homemade yakitori sauce is made in house by slowly simmering plenty of chicken with vegetables and fruit. For salt, they use rock salt to bring out the flavor of the chicken.
Both pair perfectly with the yakitori, which is made with super fresh Domestic chicken.

One feature of this restaurant is that every item on the menu is the same price. One review said this makes it easy to keep track of the bill even during the meal, since you can just count the number of plates.
You can also choose the "All you can eat and drink" option, which lets you enjoy the full menu as much as you like.

Recommended menu items include yamaimo (Japanese mountain yam), potato salad, cabbage, camembert croquettes, grilled liver, and chicken nanban (fried chicken with tartar sauce). For drinks, if you came to Torikizoku, you should probably go for a Mega.

I was in the mood for yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), so I came here for dinner. It was a little past 18:00, but the place was almost full. A counter seat was open, so I took it. Everything costs JPY360 per dish (Tax Included), so it is nice that you can get a rough idea of the total just by counting the plates. The cabbage assortment also comes with free refills, so if you eat two plates, you end up feeling pretty full.

Recommended yakitori restaurants in the Saiin and Katsura areas of Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture

Around Saiin Station, about 15 minutes by train from Kyoto Station, is a notable area packed with commercial facilities. One yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) restaurant in the area is Yakitori Koritori.
Inside, a renovated machiya (traditional townhouse) creates a stylish space with a cafe-like feel.

The restaurant sources whole Tanba Kurodori (Tanba black chicken) birds. The carefully prepared chicken is said to become even more flavorful when it is slowly grilled over charcoal.
The "Jidori no Sumibi Aburi" is also popular, featuring Tanba Kurodori boldly seared over charcoal.

The photo shows the signature menu item, "Gokujo Tsukune (premium chicken meatball skewer)." When you eat it with the sweet and savory sauce and egg yolk, you can enjoy a rich and mellow taste.
There were also reviews saying that the tsukune contains nankotsu (cartilage), so you can enjoy its crunchy texture.
るなーぐるめ
Start with their signature Gokujo Tsukune (premium chicken meatball) with egg yolk. It is light and juicy, with the nice aroma of charcoal, and when mixed with the rich egg yolk it instantly feels even more special. The classic negima (chicken and scallion skewer), sasami (chicken tenderloin), and chicken wings were all grilled just right, with a good balance of salt that really brought out the flavor of the ingredients.

Every item is cooked to perfection, and it really brings out how good the chicken is. The ramen soup at the end is light yet rich. Even though it was a weekday, the place was fully booked with reservations! I recommend making a reservation.

A yakitori restaurant located a 7-minute walk from Saiin Station. In addition to yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), it also offers a wide lineup of appetizer dishes that pair well with drinks.
If you want to enjoy the lively atmosphere, the counter seats where you can watch the cooking are recommended.

The restaurant’s yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) is slowly grilled over charcoal. It comes out fragrant on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside, with an addictive taste.
The popular "Toriya Special Yakitori Assortment" lets you enjoy the recommended cuts of the day.

The photo shows the restaurant's signature jidori tataki (lightly seared local chicken). It comes topped with plenty of yakumi (condiments), which makes the chicken taste light and refreshing.
The oden (Japanese stew) is available year round, and many reviews say the flavors are well soaked in and that it goes perfectly with alcohol.

A yakitori restaurant I keep coming back to. I ordered what I always get: seseri (chicken neck) with tare sauce, heart with tare sauce, and bonjiri (chicken tail) with salt. Each bite has that nice springy texture, and the good taste is always consistent. The tare sauce is not too sweet and tastes just right. Here, they grill the skin until it is crisp and nicely browned, so salted bonjiri and chicken skin are a must!

The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) really was good after all. I do not usually like kimo (liver), but the one here is tasty! The tomato oden (Japanese hot pot dish) is also quite good. The moyashi namul (seasoned bean sprout namul) is well seasoned with a slight kick, making it a great snack to go with drinks.
