The calm atmosphere with a Kyoto feel is part of the appeal, and it also has Private rooms, making it ideal for business entertainment and important dinners. Each yakitori (grilled chicken skewer) is carefully grilled one by one, and the savory aroma and juicy flavor fill your mouth. I had the dinner course. The refined flavors showed a clear attention to ingredients, right down to the seasonings and spices. Every skewer was grilled to perfection and seasoned with just the right amount of salt. Another nice touch is that if you tell them what kind of wine you like, they will choose one for you.

wabiya

Wabiya is a small restaurant with only 8 counter seats arranged around a wood fire. It is a sister restaurant of Wabiya Korekido, and the menu consists only of an Omakase course centered on yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).

The grill area is enclosed in glass, so you can watch the cooking from across the counter.

With the course, you can enjoy 8 kinds of yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), with salad and vegetables served in between.

They use Kyoto jidori (local chicken) specially selected by the chef, and the classic momo (thigh) is said to be juicy with deep, rich flavor.

For dessert, they serve a cheese soufflé from Kashi wabiya, a Western confectionery brand born from Wabiya Korekido.

The crisp tuile and the light, melt-in-your-mouth soufflé are said to be excellent. It is said to be a course that leaves you fully satisfied through the very last bite.

美山

A flawless course in every respect, from the ingredients, heat control, aroma, and overall composition. The experience of yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) cooked over firewood is especially Special, and even the aroma stays in your memory. It made perfect sense when I heard it is actually part of the same group as Malebranche. The attention to detail, the smart course structure, and the high quality service all stand out. This is a famous Kyoto restaurant I would definitely want to visit again.

京都のS次郎

They use both charcoal and wood fire for the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). They also change the type of chicken depending on the cut. Every dish was delicious, and each one was impressive. Personally, I really loved the sasami (chicken tenderloin). It had a juicy, tender finish unlike any I had ever eaten before. It was wonderful. The other yakitori was also so good that it was hard to choose between them.

The photo shows the eye catching Nettori Nira Reba. The liver, known for having no off notes, is tender and goes great with the sauce, nira (garlic chives), and egg yolk.

オノの肝コ

The liver is just so good. It’s the best. I really want you to try the rich and sticky nira-reba (garlic chives and liver), and the liver skewer. Just thinking back on it makes my mouth water. I also recommend the steamed 5-item assortment. The ramen to finish is also outstanding. I’ll definitely be back. It was a great meal.

The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) was all really delicious, and so were the other small plates. This is high praise, but it was almost perfect for me. Ishiyaki Jidori Torikura

At Ishiyaki Jidori Torikura, you can enjoy yakitori (grilled chicken) in an "ishiyaki (stone grilling)" style, where the chicken is grilled on a stone without skewers, unlike standard yakitori where the meat is grilled on skewers.

The interior has a calm atmosphere, with eye-catching decor featuring carefully crafted Japanese design elements.

This is the restaurant’s specialty, the “Ishiyaki 7-shu assortment.” The stone grilled chicken is said to be tender and juicy. People also say it is fun that you can adjust the doneness to your liking yourself.

At first, the staff will show you how to grill it, so anyone can cook it nicely.

The lineup of Japanese sake also has a strong reputation.

They can recommend labels to match the food and your preferences, so not only Japanese sake fans but beginners can be Manzoku as well. A tasting flight sounds fun too.

The jidori (local chicken) was tender and delicious, and it completely changed my idea of chicken because I had always imagined the kind I ate at home! Since the style is to grill it on a Teppan-yaki plate (Each) person, I was happy that I could eat piping hot chicken whenever I wanted.

It is quite filling, so even the half portion is enough to leave you Manzoku.

Sumibiyaki Koteppan

Sumibiyaki Koteppan is a yakitori restaurant just a 2-minute walk from Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station. It stands out for its charming exterior, inspired by a kyo-machiya (traditional Kyoto townhouse).

From the spacious counter seats, you can get a clear view of the yakitori being grilled, and just watching it is enough to make the beer go down easy.

The yakitori uses asabiki-dori (fresh chicken slaughtered early in the morning and sold On-the-Day) from Kyoto Fushimi (Kyoto's Fushimi area).

The more you chew, the more the rich flavor of the chicken comes through, and it pairs perfectly with the sweet sauce. It also seems like the drinks would go down easy.

Reviews say the "kimo" chicken liver skewer is especially popular.

It was a comfortable space where they clearly paid attention even to the atmosphere. On top of that, the owner's skill must be the real deal. Every dish tasted perfect. In particular, the shop's signature motsu-ni (stewed offal) had a one of a kind flavor and was really delicious.

The staff first grill the food in the kitchen, but instead of serving it on a plate, they place it on the shichirin (charcoal brazier) right in front of you so you can eat it piping hot. The house-made salt, sauce, and shoyu koji (soy sauce malt) pair perfectly with it. I got hooked on the chicken, which was very juicy and had no off notes.

Sumibi Club Yu

At Sumibi Club Yu, you can enjoy thick cuts of yakitori made with Kyo Aka Jidori (Kyoto red free-range chicken). The interior is a calm space with the warm feel of wood.

The restaurant has an open kitchen, and at the counter seats you can watch the cooking and enjoy chatting with the chefs.

The yakitori made with Kyo Akajidori (Kyoto red chicken) is said to be excellent, with a tender texture and the aroma of charcoal grilling.

The "seseri (neck meat)" is said to be best enjoyed with wasabi. The juicy seseri is full of meat juices, and its rich flavor pairs perfectly with the fresh kick of wasabi.

Many reviewers recommend the sumiyaki toast (charcoal-grilled toast). Grilling it over charcoal gives it a crunchy outside and a soft inside.

Many people said it is addictive once you try it, and there were lots of comments saying they order it every time.

• zuri-mimi (salt)
A rare cut, zuri-mimi. It has a crisp, slightly crunchy texture, like small slices of zuri layered together, yet it feels light and pleasantly snappy. The salt seasoning is spot on too.

People often say that yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) is all about how it’s cooked over the fire. But the approach also changes depending on the brand of chicken and the cut. In that sense, they really brought out the best qualities of Kyoto no akadoti (Kyoto red chicken), and every single skewer was perfectly delicious! They didn’t add anything extra, and I had everything with just salt.
