Tokusan

Tokusan is a seafood izakaya (Japanese-style pub) just a 2-minute walk from Tokushima Station. It has a warm, unpretentious feel, with counter and table seating on the first floor and Private rooms on the second and third floors.

This restaurant lets you enjoy dishes made with local ingredients and local sake from Tokushima.

The “hon-yoko no osashimi (sashimi of young tuna)” is said to stand out for the light umami that is unique to juvenile tuna.

The thick-cut slices are said to be moist and tender, with no distinctive flavor, making them easy to enjoy. It is a menu item that feels right at home in a Tokushima izakaya where you can enjoy locally caught fresh fish.

Try the "Awaodori (Tokushima brand chicken) grilled with salt," where you can fully enjoy Tokushima’s branded chicken. The skin is said to be fragrant and crisp, while the meat is juicy.

With just the right amount of heat, it offers a pleasantly tender bite. It also pairs perfectly with local Tokushima sake.

M.Dream

This restaurant offers a wide lineup, including local fish from Tokushima and beef dishes made with Nobe Bokujo (Nobe Farm) beef, so it is hard to decide what to order. The local fish is fresh and tasty. The meat dishes are not overly fatty, so they do not feel heavy and pair well with drinks. Every dish was delicious, and I was able to enjoy a great time with good food and drinks.

It was my first night in Tokushima in decades, and I was brought here with a reservation since it is a popular izakaya (Japanese pub). The sashimi was so good! I had plenty of fresh local ingredients, including Awaodori (Tokushima native chicken), lotus root, and edamame. Even the wakame (seaweed) served with the sashimi had a great springy texture, and everything was delicious! This one place alone lets you fully enjoy Tokushima!

The interior is a calm space with the warmth of wood, with 25 seats in total, including 5 counter seats and 20 zashiki (tatami seating) seats. You can enjoy Tokushima flavors such as Awaodori (Tokushima jidori chicken), Naruto Kintoki (sweet potato), and Naruto renkon (lotus root).

The "Awaodori (brand chicken) overnight dried" is limited to 10 servings a day.

This rare menu item is said to have just the right amount of moisture removed to lock in the flavor. People say the fragrant aroma from the searing and the moist, tender texture are addictive.

"Komatsushima no fisshu katsu (Komatsushima fish cutlet)" is a Tokushima specialty made with minced white fish such as tachiuo (cutlassfish) and eso (lizardfish).

At "Za Torijiro," they lightly crisp it up over charcoal. The curry flavored coating whets the appetite and pairs well with drinks. It is also recommended to eat it with mayonnaise.

Kushiden

Kushiden is an izakaya where you can enjoy kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) along with a wide variety of à la carte dishes. It also has a great location, just a 2-minute walk from Tokushima Station.

The interior has a calm atmosphere, with deliberately dim lighting. There are counter seats and zashiki (tatami seating), making it an easy place to visit whether you are on your own or with a group.

The photo shows the restaurant's signature kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). The coating is said to be thin and light, with a nice crisp bite.

In addition to chuno sauce, ponzu sauce, and mayo sauce, they offer several kinds of salt, which is part of the appeal since you can enjoy it with your favorite flavor. It also pairs perfectly with beer.

They also offer many a la carte dishes besides kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). The "skin-on French fries" are said to be fluffy inside and crisp on the outside, and many people order them as a classic izakaya menu item.

Their simple flavor makes them a good match with beer or a highball.

I had a reservation and was shown to a table on the second floor. The dim lighting inside creates a calm atmosphere. I ordered whatever I felt like eating other than vegetables. Just like in the photos, the batter was light, and the skewers were fried up crisp and very nicely. The sauce had a bit more thickness than the kushikatsu sauce in Osaka, where it originated.

I visited for the first time with a friend, just the two of us! On the first floor, there was one table for four and counter seating, and there were also seats on the second floor, but the place was cozy and calm! There were many kinds of skewers, but this time we ordered an assortment and some meat A la carte. It was good!

When I opened the door, I was surprised by the bright wood toned interior and the authentic Japanese style atmosphere, even complete with an ishidoro (stone lantern). Along with the standard items, the menu also features Tokushima specialties and Western style ingredients, and since the portions are small overall, it is nice that even one person can enjoy trying a variety of dishes.

The All you can eat and drink deal was an amazing value! Even when we ordered more Hot Pot ingredients, a huge amount came out, which really surprised us. It was cold, so I’m glad we chose the Hot Pot. You get to eat plenty of vegetables, and it doesn’t even feel too heavy. I definitely want to go again! The small dishes served in between were also really delicious, and the All you can drink selection was more than enough.

I had a variety of things, and the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) was simply good. But this time, the hits were the karamisoyakko (cold tofu with spicy miso) and yudofu (simmered tofu). The spicy miso had a seasoning that tasted like a mix of miso, mirin, and gochujang, and it went well with the hiyayakko (cold tofu). The heat kicked in afterward. The yudofu had a nice accent from the tartness of sudachi (Japanese citrus), and it was tasty.
