Popular izakaya (Japanese pubs) in Akita City, Akita Prefecture

Inaniwa Udon Mugendo Akita Ekimae Ten

Inaniwa Udon Mugendo Akita Ekimae Ten is an izakaya located a 3-minute walk from JR Akita Station. It has sister restaurants in Akita City.

The interior, designed in the style of a Dutch trading house, has a dreamy atmosphere and looks very charming. The second floor is said to have thoughtfully designed Private rooms.

At this restaurant, you can enjoy Akita Prefecture local dishes such as iburigakko (smoked pickled daikon), along with drinks that pair well with the food.

The drink menu always includes local sake from Akita Prefecture and craft beer brewed around Lake Tazawako. It is a good pick for people who want to try drinks unique to Akita Prefecture.

One of the “three great udon varieties of Japan,” Inaniwa udon is carefully finished by hand by skilled artisans.

In addition to cold zaru udon (chilled udon served on a bamboo tray), they also offer a wide range of original menu items, including hot Hinai jidori (Hinai local chicken) Mugen Udon.

The goal was to have a light second round of Japanese sake, but we also ordered a standout pork dish. It was tender and incredibly delicious. We also ordered one serving of kiritanpo-nabe (pounded rice skewer Hot Pot) and shared it one bite at a time. This was great too! Then came Inaniwa udon. Today, it was served as a combo of cold noodles and warm dipping broth. This was nice too.

Kiritanpo Hot Pot (pounded rice skewer hot pot), Hinai jidori (Hinai chicken), and Inaniwa udon (thin hand-stretched udon noodles) were all firsts for me, and I was amazed at how good they were! The bubbling kiritanpo Hot Pot was full of flavor from the Hinai jidori broth, and the taste soaked in so well and was delicious! The salad with smoked eggs and Hinai jidori was also tasty with its shio koji miso dressing, and the smoked eggs had a really strong smoky aroma. The Inaniwa udon was super smooth and beautiful

Kappo Izakaya Iwaya

This izakaya (Japanese pub) is located about 10 minutes by car from Akita Station. You can enjoy horse meat dishes such as basashi (horse sashimi), as well as Japanese food.

The interior has a warm wooden feel and a homey atmosphere. It looks easy to visit not only with a group, but also on your own.

The restaurant’s signature basashi (horse sashimi) is said to be irresistible, with its unique flavor and light yet deep taste. Along with the standard “akami-sashi (lean meat sashimi),” you can also choose rare cuts such as “tategami (mane)” and “futaego (marbled rib meat).”

Many reviews said it pairs perfectly with Akita no jizake (local sake from Akita)!

A popular menu item, the dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelet), also comes in a mentaiko (spicy cod roe) version. The rolled omelet has a good dashi flavor and a light sweetness, and it pairs well with drinks.

The Omakase course, where you can enjoy dishes based on your budget, requires a reservation by the day before.

The sunagimo yukke komi-ni (seasoned simmered chicken gizzard tartare-style) has a solid flavor, with egg coating the simmered gizzards, making for a pretty interesting taste that goes down well with beer, Japanese sake, or shochu. The Japanese sake we had was Chiyomidori Karakuchi Nama and Ipaku Suisei. Both were easy to drink, refreshing, and paired well with the food.

エルシーロ

The basashi (horse sashimi) and seri-nabe (Japanese parsley Hot Pot) were especially good! The soup for the seri-nabe had a pepper-like spicy kick, and it was a first-time flavor for me that I got hooked on! There were about two other kinds of Hot Pot on the menu, so I thought I’d like to try those next time too.

Garaku

Garaku is an izakaya about a 5-minute walk from Akita Station's west exit, where you can enjoy Akita Prefecture's local cuisine and a selection of 20 kinds of local sake always on hand.

The chic interior has counter and table seating, as well as Private room options.

They offer many course menus packed with local gourmet dishes from Akita Prefecture, including the "Kyodo Ryori Course". Another nice point is that some courses can be reserved from 1 person.

The dishes are colorful and have a look that makes you want to take photos.

If you want to enjoy local sake from Akita Prefecture, the recommended choice is the "Akita no Jizake o Ajiwaeru Eraberu Kikizake Set 3 Shu" (choose-your-own tasting set of 3 local Akita sakes). You can choose 1 daiginjo and 2 other kinds of Japanese sake.

Some reviews also said the Edo Kiriko cut glassware looked stylish.

柳暗

The course is packed with local dishes from Appetizers to the main. The Appetizers include plenty of snacks that go well with alcohol, such as junsai (watershield) and iburigakko (smoked pickled daikon). The main kiri-tanpo nabe (pounded rice skewer Hot Pot) has amazing soup. It is a soy sauce based soup with a strong dashi flavor, and it is so good you could drink it all on its own. The kiri-tanpo was also nice and chewy, and it soaked up the flavor well in a short time. The Hinai jidori (Hinai free-range chicken) was only served in a small amount, but it was also delicious.

I ordered the kiritanpo-nabe (pounded rice stick Hot Pot) course: otoshi (small appetizer), sashimi, hatahata (sailfin sandfish) tempura (it went perfectly with salt!), and kiritanpo-nabe (it was my first time, but since I love seri, it was a perfect match for me too), plus a seri salad (I was blown away) and Hinai jidori (free-range chicken from Akita) tsukune, then cold Inaniwa udon and dessert to finish. For drinks, I had a highball and hot sake of Takashimizu.

Shabu-shabu Shubo Biton

An 11-minute drive from Akita Station and located across from Akita City Hall, Shabu Shabu Shubo Biton is a restaurant where you can enjoy shabu-shabu made with Okinawan Agu-buta (Agu pork) and Akita-grown Hachimantai Pork.

In addition to Semi-private room seating divided by roll curtains and counter seats, the restaurant also has fully private rooms.

The brand pork shabu-shabu is said to be so good you will not be able to stop eating once you dip it in the house made sauce made with carefully selected ingredients.

The vegetables served with the shabu-shabu use seasonal produce from Akita Prefecture. If you book by 2 days in advance, you can also enjoy Hinai Jidori (Hinai chicken) kiritanpo-nabe (pounded rice skewer Hot Pot).

You can also enjoy Okinawan dishes such as goya chanpuru (stir-fried bitter melon) and jiimami tofu (peanut tofu). They also serve awamori (Okinawan distilled liquor), so pairing it with the Okinawan food sounds like a great option.

Truffle dishes made with seasonal truffles and brand pork are also popular.

vctr-koga

We had the shabu-shabu course and a variety of other dishes. Both the drinks and the food were all delicious. We ate so much that we were completely full. Everyone at the restaurant was polite, and we had a very pleasant meal. I really recommend this place.

Agu pork (Okinawan black pork) was tender and very delicious. The dipping sauces were ponzu sauce with shikuwasa (Okinawan citrus) and sesame sauce, and adding chili oil with nuts to the sesame sauce brought out the good flavor of the meat even more. You can ask for extra dipping sauce if you want. The All you can drink option also included beer.

Fukutoya

This is an izakaya where you can enjoy yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) cooked over binchotan (Japanese white charcoal). It is an 8-minute drive from Akita Station.

They also offer an A la carte All you can drink menu that includes 10 kinds of specially selected local sake from Akita Prefecture, so it is also recommended as an izakaya.

The restaurant's yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) are carefully skewered one by one. The photo shows the "Homemade tsukune (chicken meatball skewer)" made with Hinai jidori (Hinai free-range chicken).

When you eat the tsukune with the egg yolk and the nicely sweet sauce, you can enjoy its rich flavor.

The photo shows their signature menu item, takigyoza (dumplings simmered in soup). The rich flavored broth soaks into the house-made pan-fried gyoza, and it apparently goes perfectly with alcohol.

There were also reviews saying that the rice porridge made with the broth and the champon (Nagasaki-style noodle dish) are excellent.

makoto_0913

The star here is yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). The lineup covers the basics like momo (chicken thigh), negima (chicken and scallion skewer), kawa (chicken skin), and tsukune (chicken meatball skewer), and each one is cooked just right. The momo in particular has an excellent balance of fragrant char on the outside and juicy meat inside, making it a skewer that delivers the full flavor of charcoal grilling straight on. The negima brings out the sweetness of the scallion, while the kawa is finished in a way that renders off the extra fat but keeps its rich flavor. The tsukune is soft and fluffy

I chose the barbecue pork wrapped in kiritanpo (pounded rice skewers). The rice had a firm texture, and the pork was crispy. The lightly spicy tataki kyuri (smashed cucumber) was refreshing, and the sauce and ninniku (garlic) yakumi (condiments) were very tasty.

Iimonya Tori Niku Omachi Ten

Iimonya Toriniku Omachi Ten is an izakaya located a 15-minute walk from the west exit of JR Akita Station. It has sister restaurants in Akita City.

Inside, the restaurant has Semi-private room that can also be reserved for private use. The counter seats face an open kitchen, so diners can enjoy the lively atmosphere.

The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) cooked over binchotan (Japanese white charcoal) stands out for its generously cut pieces of chicken. They are very satisfying to eat and make a great match for beer.

The "negima (chicken and scallion skewer)" comes in two types, thigh and breast, so it would be fun to compare them.

They also offer a wide range of izakaya dishes that pair well with drinks. The "Eraberu Otsumami (choose your appetizers)" is especially popular, letting you pick 2 items from the extensive menu, and it is said to be enough on its own to leave you fully Manzoku.

They also have a wide lineup of cocktails and highballs.

リーだ

I ordered negima (chicken and scallion skewer), kawa (chicken skin skewer), and a few others, and the skin here is the regular kind. Sometimes you just want regular chicken skin. The reliable cheese tsukune is great too, and while the nankotsu (chicken cartilage) is pricey, the cartilage pieces are big and tasty. They also have a wide range of items beyond yakitori, like a 2-item otsumami assortment and menchi-katsu (breaded minced meat cutlet). I had some Japanese sake along with eihire (grilled stingray fin). Hmm, this is a place I’d definitely like to come back to.

藤里の米農家

Each piece of yakitori (grilled chicken skewer) was large and satisfying to eat. The chicken Kara-age pieces were also very big. The staff were lively and energetic, which gave the restaurant a great atmosphere. I sat at the counter, and I enjoyed watching the food being prepared while I ate. It was fun to watch as well as delicious. Above all, it was cheap and tasty!

Hi no Za

Hinoza is an izakaya where you can enjoy grilled meat and fish, slowly cooked over an irori (sunken hearth). The interior has a Japanese modern design and a calm atmosphere.

It also has many Private rooms, making it a good choice for group dinners. The restaurant is about a 15-minute walk from the West Exit of JR Akita Station.

The photo shows hatahata (sailfin sandfish), the official fish of Akita Prefecture. Rich, fatty hatahata is said to become even more flavorful when grilled over charcoal.

The menu is full of dishes made with local ingredients, including Hinai jidori (Hinai free-range chicken) kiritanpo Hot Pot and Hinai jidori ajitama (seasoned soft-boiled egg) tempura.

The photo shows the "Nadai Tsukune-yaki (signature grilled chicken meatball)," limited to one skewer per person. The tsukune with its light sauce is said to go perfectly with alcohol.

Some reviews also said it is delicious to put the egg and tsukune over rice and eat it like a Rice bowl.

Randroid

The grilled hatahata (sailfin sandfish) also had a rich, solid flavor, and some people even ended up eating the head. And what I personally really want to recommend is this special tsukune (chicken meatball) over egg rice♬.*゚Even while drinking, it does not feel heavy, and you eat the hearty, juicy tsukune with wasabi and egg mixed in. Simply put, it is excellent

Shiraho

Tsuchizaki, in the northern part of Akita City, is a historic area known for the Tsuchizaki Shinmeisha Sai no Hikiyama Gyoji (Tsuchizaki Shinmeisha Festival Float Procession).

In that Tsuchizaki area, Shiraho is an izakaya where you can enjoy seasonal seafood. The interior is fully equipped with various types of seating, including Private room and Sunken kotatsu seating.

The seafood sourced directly from nearby fishing ports has a great reputation for outstanding freshness. The photo shows "tessa (fugu sashimi)" made with fugu (pufferfish) from Akita Prefecture.

The sashimi is sliced so thin that you can see the pattern of the plate through it, and the presentation is very beautiful.

At Shiraho, you can also enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine made with plenty of mountain ingredients from Akita Prefecture. Everything is said to be delicately seasoned and pairs well with drinks.

They also offer a selection of local sake from across Japan, including rare bottles from Akita, as well as shochu (Japanese distilled spirit).

マリモエルモ23

The springy torafugu (tiger pufferfish) tessa (thin sliced raw pufferfish) was excellent, and the fragrant, crispy, springy Kara-age was great too✨(I ordered another serving) The fugu shottsuru-mushi (pufferfish steamed with fish sauce) was also delicious. I’d definitely love to visit again on my next trip to Akita!

In addition to fresh oysters, you can also enjoy oyster dishes like "kaki (oyster) peperoncino" and fried oysters. This is just the kind of place oyster lovers will appreciate.

The portions are not overly large either, making it a good pick for people who want to try a variety of dishes.

チョコ大好きお母さん

I ordered the course meal. They had a very wide selection of oyster dishes. The sashimi, oyster gratin, pasta, and fried oysters were all very delicious. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was stylish as well. I would love to visit again. Thank you to the staff as well for the very polite service. The access was convenient too.

The "kaki furai (fried oysters)" are crisp on the outside and wonderfully creamy inside. Take one bite of the piping hot fry, and the rich umami of the oysters spreads across your mouth, bringing an instant smile. They also offer many other oyster dishes, making this an irresistible lineup for oyster lovers. Sumino Kura, Sumibi Yakitori (charcoal grilled chicken skewers) to Akita no Sakana (Akita side dishes)

The restaurant is about 8 minutes by car from JR Akita Station, near Akarenga Kyodokan.

The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) here uses brand chickens such as Saisai-dori and Hinai-jidori (premium Akita free-range chicken). Because they grill chicken that has never been frozen over binchotan (high-grade charcoal), it turns out plump and juicy.

They also use a special Akita miso for the yakitori sauce.

Popular menu items also include dishes made with Akita specialties, such as the "Hinai jidori (Hinai chicken) kiritanpo Hot Pot" and the "chicken Kara-age" made in an Akita shottsuru style.

Reviews said that the "kujira kayaki" made with salted whale has an excellent broth full of rich whale flavor.

syam-23

The yakitori was good, but the dadami tempura (cod milt tempura) was especially delicious. Just like I had heard, the otoshi (small appetizer) was sushi, and that was tasty too! The food came quickly, and with spacious seating, Private room, counter seats, and more, this seems like a great place for a Year-End Party too. The courses look tempting as well!

The Japanese sake focuses mainly on local labels from within the prefecture, with a few from outside the prefecture as well. If you order it by the glass, it’s about one go, I think. They pour a pretty generous amount, and the price is reasonable, which is nice. The sashimi is delicious, and the skewers are great too. It’s a well-balanced place, and I like this kind of spot.

doguu145

I love this place. Best of all, the otoshi (small appetizer) chawanmushi (savory egg custard) is great. When I visited this time, chawanmushi was on the menu. You can order another serving. The sashimi assortment always features fresh seasonal selections. And for drinks, they even have No.6.

The sakizuke (small appetizer) is a bit refined, and it gives the place a nice upscale feel, almost like dining at a kappo (traditional Japanese fine dining) restaurant. We visited as a group of three, and since every dish was served as an individual portion, we could enjoy the meal at a relaxed pace. They offered meat Hot Pot, sashimi, meat dishes, and more... There was also a wide selection of drinks in the All you can drink menu, making it an easy place to use and relax in.

The kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) were freshly fried, nice and crispy, and went great with beer. I rarely order it, but whenever I eat kushikatsu, I start craving a lemon sour. It has a lively, bustling atmosphere that is great for chatting, eating, and drinking. It was delicious.

Perfect for a quick drink! The food came out without much of a wait, and I got to enjoy hot, freshly fried kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). Another plus is that they open before noon on Saturdays. But if you go around 5 o’clock, there can be a wait of over an hour, so if you definitely want to eat here, go early! And I also recommend making a reservation.

The bold presentation makes it look very satisfying to eat, doesn't it?

かなでぃん

We had collaboration menu items like the Colt Python-style fried glove and Umibozu (sea monk)-inspired potatoes. The sauce served with the otoshi (appetizer) cabbage was tasty, and the grilled squid was also good. The salmon was plump and nicely fatty, and we enjoyed it as well.

Akita Prefecture [Yokote City]'s Popular Izakaya (Japanese pubs)

Kuidooraku Honten

Yokote City, about 1 hour from Akita Station by shinkansen (bullet train), is a charming area surrounded by grand nature.

One izakaya (Japanese pub) in the Yokote area is Kuidoraku Honten. The bright interior also has tatami seating style Private rooms.

The signature dish, Yokote yakisoba (Yokote-style fried noodles), is a local specialty that Yokote City is proud of. It uses an original sauce based on Japanese-style dashi broth.

The sauce coats the thick, chewy noodles really well, making it so good you'll want another helping.

The restaurant also offers a wide range of izakaya (Japanese pub) dishes you can enjoy casually. One of the most popular is the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), cooked over binchotan (high-grade white charcoal).

The secret sauce, passed down for 34 years since the restaurant first opened, is said to have a rich and full-bodied taste.

そうだ!京都だ。

At night, I ordered from the izakaya menu, including grilled sanma (Pacific saury) with salt, stir-fried Horumon, and skewers. It was reasonably priced and tasty. To finish, I ordered the beef belly yakisoba. The slightly sweet sauce mixed with the ground meat and noodles like soup noodles, and when I mixed in the soft-cooked egg, it tasted blissfully good. It was a great meal.

This place seems to be famous for Yokote yakisoba (Yokote-style fried noodles), but it also has a wide range of izakaya dishes! From the recommended menu of the day, we ordered grilled Pacific saury, Yamauchi imo-no-ko jiru (Yamauchi taro soup), and stir-fried Horumon. The imo-no-ko jiru was really good. It feels so comforting when you drink Japanese sake with this. They have a good selection of sake from Akita.

Mekiki no Ginji Yokote Higashiguchi Ekimae Ten

Mekiki no Ginji Yokote Higashiguchi Ekimae Ten is an izakaya (Japanese pub) located a 2-minute walk from the East Exit of Yokote Station. You can enjoy seafood dishes made with fresh seafood, along with drinks that pair well with the food.

The interior has a homey atmosphere, and it is said to be easy to drop in whether you are on your own or with a group.

If you want to enjoy the great taste of seafood, the "Sashimi Ryoshi assortment" is a good pick. In particular, the "Gokai Sashimi seven-item assortment" features thick-cut sashimi that is said to be very satisfying.

The sashimi and yukhoe made with Oranda-jima Salmon from Iwate Prefecture are also popular.

The photo shows the specialty dish "Hamayaki (grilled seafood)." Since you grill it on the tabletop stove right in front of you, you can also enjoy the nice aroma as it cooks.

There is also a wide lineup of course menus with All you can drink that can be ordered for 2 people or more.

I entered 30 minutes before last order. The otoshi (small appetizer) was three lightly grilled items. It is not in the photo, but I also had kani miso korayaki (crab miso grilled in the shell). The shrimp crackers and sweet chili went great with the drinks. They had a wide selection of whisky, which I enjoyed. It was a great meal.

We went with the All you can drink course only! It is a hamayaki (seaside-style grill) style where you grill fresh ingredients right at the table on a stove and enjoy them. They also have a bold dish where ingredients are steamed in a can, like the kind that often holds senbei (rice crackers) and such (gangan!?). Starting with sashimi and other carefully selected seafood, grilling everything right in front of you as you eat is all so exciting(^^;)

Popular izakaya (Japanese pubs) in Daisen, Akita Prefecture

Yokocho Sakaba Kingyo

Surrounded by the Ou Sanmyaku (Ou Mountains) and the Dewa Kyuryo (Dewa Hills), Daisen City is known as a foodie area with local specialties such as rice, edamame, and Japanese sake.

One recommended izakaya in Daisen City is Yokocho Sakaba Kingyo. The restaurant is a 5-minute walk from Omagari Station.

The photo shows the restaurant's signature item, Utsunomiya Dai Gyoza (giant Utsunomiya dumplings). They are Homemade in the restaurant, and you can choose either 8 pieces or 4 pieces.

The chewy wrappers and vegetable-filled filling are said to be a perfect match. They also offer unique menu items such as Gorgonzola Sui Gyoza (boiled dumplings).

The "beef tendon stew" has a rich seasoning and is said to pair perfectly with Japanese sake.

They always have 10 kinds of Japanese sake from both inside and outside the prefecture. There is a wide range, from clean dry types to mellow sweet ones.

The “gyu reba (beef liver)” is lightly seared, so maybe they only torch the surface. It has a rich, sticky texture, and it is unusual that it comes with wasabi instead of ginger or other condiments. The “ika sugata (whole squid)” is a slender squid served with kimodare (liver sauce), stretched with butter and mixed with mayonnaise. The springy texture of the squid and the rich liver sauce go incredibly well with beer or a highball.

The menu has a wide variety of options, and every dish looks good. I ordered hoppy (a shochu-based drink mixer) for the first time in a while. As expected, it is great value for money. The gyoza (dumplings) stood out among the food. Each one is large and very satisfying. They made me want to eat even more.

Akita Prefecture [Noshiro City]'s Popular Izakaya

Shushoku Saien Sui

Shushoku Saien Sui is an izakaya located a 5-minute walk from Noshiro Station, the gateway to Shirakami Sanchi (Shirakami Mountains), a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.

The interior has a calm atmosphere with Japanese-modern decor. In addition to table seating, there are also Semi-private room seats with Sunken kotatsu seating.

You can enjoy dishes made with brand meats such as Noshiro-gyu (Noshiro beef) from Akita Prefecture and Shirakami Jidori (Shirakami free-range chicken).

The aburi-yaki (flame-grilled dishes) and yakitori grilled over shiraki (white wood) from Noshiro City are said to be excellent, with a smoky aroma that brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients.

The pizzas here have a thin, crispy crust. They are light in texture and are said to be great both as a snack with drinks and as a final dish after drinking.

The "Ganso Negi Miso Pizza" in the photo is said in reviews to pair well with rich miso flavor and Japanese sake.

A rare non-chain izakaya near Noshiro Station with Private rooms. The calm atmosphere is a nice plus for drinking alone. Also, the thick oshibori (wet hand towel) is a nice little bonus point. To finish, you should definitely try the tonburi (Japanese land caviar) fried rice. The texture is fun, and it is easy on the wallet, so I recommend it.

よちりこ

I ordered a beer, and the sizes were listed kind of like extra large, large, medium, and small, with "medium tumbler" on the menu, so I figured the "large mug" would be the next step up, but I was surprised when it turned out to be a pretty big mug. They also had a great selection for comparing Japanese sake. The food was nicely plated, and it was properly good too.
