Izakaya in the Nakano area! 20 popular spots where you can enjoy both drinks and food

Nakano is one of Tokyo's standout areas for its strong subculture scene. It has easy access from Shinjuku and is always bustling with people on both weekdays and weekends. This time, we’re focusing on izakaya (Japanese pubs) in the Nakano area and have rounded up recommended spots where you can enjoy both drinks and food.

Created: July 21, 2026

This article is based on3,771Tabelog reviews.

Joushou

Joushou is an izakaya (Japanese pub) where you can enjoy seafood dishes and fine sake from around Japan.

The interior is spread across two floors, 1F and 2F, with a variety of seating options for everyone from small groups to larger parties. It has the feel of a traditional old house, making it a relaxing place to unwind.

They are particular about sourcing and serve fresh seafood delivered directly from the fishing port every day.

The seasonal seafood is popular for how good it tastes, and another draw is that you can choose an assortment to match your group size. The photo shows today's otsukuri (sashimi assortment), a 5-piece sashimi selection.

For snacks to go with drinks, the traditional Tosa-style straw grilling is recommended.

The "katsuo wara-yaki (straw-grilled bonito)" in the photo is said to have its flavor concentrated by grilling it over a straw fire. The bonito, wrapped in its unique aroma, is popular for how tasty it is.

They say the flavor stands out even more when you eat it with ponzu sauce and yakumi (condiments) such as garlic and ginger.

かつ煮定食

With the lively atmosphere that feels so much like Nakano (district in Tokyo), it’s not unusual for people at the next table to strike up a conversation, and that sense of closeness with others is part of what makes this place special. It was the kind of restaurant that made me want to come back again for sure.

わっけん

I booked a course meal. The restaurant felt a bit small. The tables are fairly close to the neighboring guests. The meal focused on fish, and everything was delicious. The lineup of Japanese sake was also very satisfying. The bonito was especially good. As always, Nakano (a district in Tokyo) has a lot of great places. I’ll visit again.

Kakuuchi Kappo Sansai

Kakuuchi Kappo Sansai is an izakaya where you can enjoy local sake from around Japan and dishes made with seasonal ingredients.

Inside, there are a “Kakuuchi zone” and a “kappo (traditional Japanese dining) zone.” The Kakuuchi zone is a good choice for those who want to casually enjoy local sake, while the kappo zone is recommended for those who want to take their time and savor a meal.

This is the “oeuf mayo potato salad mille-feuille style.”

This stylish plate features oeuf mayo, a boiled egg topped with mayo, placed on bread mille-feuille layered with boiled potatoes. It is said to be more filling than it looks, with a high level of Manzoku.

"Kara-age Mao Zedong Spice" dusted with super spicy spices.

This dish is generously topped with chili peppers, huajiao (Sichuan peppercorns), dried shrimp, and fried garlic, and stands out for its savory heat and tongue-tingling flavor. The balance of the chili heat, the numbing huajiao, and the fragrant garlic is said to be just right.

Every dish in the photos looks delicious, and I think this is probably a place where you can't go wrong no matter what you order. They also had a great selection of alcohol other than Japanese sake, like tea with shochu and sours, so I think even people who don't drink Japanese sake can enjoy it!

・Dojo Kara-age (deep-fried loach)
The small dojo (loach) are probably deep-fried twice, nice and slow. The result is excellent, showing that dojo is not just a tiny eel but a delicate white fish. I was impressed. It matched perfectly with the super-dry Raifuku. That was a great choice.

Saba Gin

Saba Gin is an izakaya (Japanese pub) about a 2-minute walk from Nakano Station, where you can enjoy saba (mackerel) dishes and charcoal grilled skewers.

The interior is said to focus on comfort, with decor that lets you feel the warmth of wood. Soft toned lighting is also said to create a relaxing space where you can unwind.

As you would expect from a restaurant that specializes in saba (mackerel), it offers a full lineup of mackerel dishes such as saba sashimi, shime-saba sashimi, and saba namero (minced mackerel with seasonings).

The “saba-zukushi” in the photo is a popular dish that lets you enjoy three kinds: raw, seared, and To finish. Every piece of fresh saba is rich and fatty, making it perfect to pair with a drink.

The popular menu item "shime saba sando (marinated mackerel sandwich)" is the kind of dish you get hooked on after just one bite.

It features lightly marinated saba (mackerel) sandwiched in toasted bread, and even people who do not usually like shime saba say they can enjoy it. The salty note of the butter adds a nice accent, and it is said to be so easy to eat that you finish it in no time.

There were so many mackerel dishes that it was hard to choose. It was my first time trying saba no sashimi (mackerel sashimi), and it was rich with fat and juicy!!The aburi had a nice fragrant note, different from the sashimi. The goma-saba (mackerel with sesame) was different from what I had imagined, and I could really enjoy the natural flavor of the mackerel.

As expected from Saba Gin, everything was spot on and delicious. The all-mackerel spread was great of course, but the grilled mackerel skewers and the grilled ami-tsukune (minced fish cake) were also seriously good. The finishing mackerel fried rice was excellent too! Just what you would expect.

We ate at the counter seats. They served freshly fried tempura right in front of us, and everything was piping hot and crispy! Eating it with salt really brought out the flavor of the ingredients, and it was so good. The egg tempura in particular had the perfect soft-boiled texture, and the yolk was wonderfully runny, which really impressed us.

ただの人参

From the classics like shrimp and chikuwa (tube-shaped fish cake) to more unusual picks topped with prosciutto, each one had a light batter that brought out the flavor of the ingredients. They were not greasy at all, and the moment you took a bite, a crisp crunch and toasty aroma spread through your mouth. The popular menu item “ebi mayo (shrimp with mayo sauce)” is the kind where the whole shrimp, from head to tail, is carefully fried until crisp.

The plump shrimp has a springy texture, and the sweet-savory sauce with mentaiko (pollock roe) brings out its flavor. It is said to be so good that you will finish it in no time.

カナ05

What is great about this place is that the interior is stylish and calm, yet the price range is about the same as a casual izakaya. The food was good, and the service was fast, which was nice too. The dashimaki (rolled omelet) and the kuroi tsukune (black chicken meatball) are especially recommended because they are outstanding! I just barely got in without a reservation on Wednesday night, but people who came later were turned away, so it is best to make a reservation.

The restaurant has counter and table seating, and while it feels a bit small, it gave me the impression that there were more seats than I expected. The drinks and food came out very quickly, and the staff were upbeat, which was nice. The tonpeiyaki (Japanese pork omelet) was delicious! Above all, every yakitori (grilled chicken skewer) here is delicious. The sasami (chicken tenderloin) is especially prized, with only a few skewers available each day, and some days they do not get any at all. For the otoshi (small appetizer), you can choose three items from several options, and this time I went with simmered eggplant, persimmon and prosciutto, mentaiko lotus root, plus kuri no shibukawani (sweet simmered chestnuts in their inner skin), and every one of them felt like a carefully made dish that showed the chef’s attention to detail.

トラステヴェレ

Jazz plays in the background, giving the place a calm atmosphere, which is a nice touch. The otoshi (small appetizer) is unusual because it is soba noodles. We ordered oden, simmered Beef Tongue, buri (yellowtail) sashimi, and Tochio no Aburaage (deep-fried tofu from Tochio). The oden had a clear, flavorful broth so good you could drink it all. Every dish was a hit.

Manmaru

Manmaru, about a 5-minute walk from Shin-Nakano Station, is an izakaya located on a lucky spot that was once a mikosho (resting place for portable shrines during festivals).

The stylish interior is said to have counter and table seating as well as Semi-private room seating. The comfortable atmosphere is part of the appeal, letting guests relax and enjoy their meal at an easy pace.

Because the owner is from Hokkaido, you can enjoy dishes made with ingredients from Hokkaido.

The "4-item sashimi assortment" is said to include a selection of seasonal seafood such as tuna, Sea Bream, yellowtail, and sweet shrimp. The exceptionally fresh seafood has a plump, springy texture, letting you enjoy the natural flavor of each ingredient.

The menu is lined with appealing dishes such as the "Dosanko Hamburger Steak" and "Shrimp Ball Spring Rolls with Chili Mayo Sauce."

The "Negitoro (minced tuna with green onion) Avocado Fry" in the photo is a playful dish topped with negitoro over avocado wrapped in a crisp coating.

I had no idea there was such a stylish place in Shin-Nakano! Even though it was Friday, I was able to relax and take my time◎All of the food was delicious, and with the ochawari (shochu mixed with tea), you can add more of the alcohol, so the drinks went down very easily(^^)The staff were also very pleasant, and I’d love to visit again♩

I visited for the first time recently, loved the food, and came back again! There is a great variety, and everything is delicious! There are still more items on the menu I want to try...! On top of that, the dishes came out at a nice pace, which made me happy since I am impatient.

Torimichi Sakaba Nakano Gochome Ten

Torimichi Sakaba Nakano Gochome Ten is a popular izakaya about a 3-minute walk from Nakano Station, known for letting you enjoy jidori (free-range chicken) dishes and local sake.

The spacious interior is lively, with the feel of a casual neighborhood izakaya. It also has fully private rooms for large groups, so you can enjoy conversation and drinks without worrying about the people at the next table.

This is the popular menu item, "Jiman no Tori Gyoza (signature chicken dumplings)."

These dumplings are grilled until crisp and fragrant, and with one bite, rich savory juices spill out from inside. Reviews also say they have the healthy feel that comes with chicken, so you can keep eating them without feeling guilty.

This is the yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) "Omakase 5-skewer assortment."

The lineup is said to be nicely varied, with negima (chicken and scallion skewer), quail eggs, nankotsu (chicken cartilage), pork belly, and more. The yakitori are grilled with just the right heat, concentrating their flavor, and every skewer is said to be good.

The salmon carpaccio was a pleasant Appetizers dish, with rich fatty salmon and a gentle smoky aroma. The chicken gyoza (dumplings) were juicy, with pleasantly chewy wrappers, and paired perfectly with beer! The takoyaki (octopus balls) had a fun contrast in texture, crisp on the outside and soft and creamy inside, and even as an izakaya dish, they were as good as what you would expect from a specialty shop.

・Cream cheese with wasabi-zuke (pickled wasabi)
The mild cheese had a fresh wasabi aroma that spread nicely. It had a slight kick, but the rich flavor of the cheese balanced it out. The perfect balance of richness and spice was addictive.
