Restaurants in Tokyo’s Shinjuku, Yoyogi, and Okubo area where you can enjoy udon
Photograph:ジゲンACE
This popular udon restaurant lets you enjoy authentic Sanuki udon (Kagawa-style udon) in Tokyo. It is about a 5-minute walk from JR Shinjuku Station.
The interior is said to be fairly spacious, with a warm and comfortable atmosphere. In addition to counter seats that make it easy to stop by alone, it also has table seating.
By carefully making noodles in-house from udon dough delivered daily from Kagawa, the restaurant offers the fresh-made taste of authentic Sanuki-style udon.
The noodles have a firm chewy bite, and the aroma of wheat seems to spread through your mouth with every bite. All portions come in a small size, so it is also a good choice when you want something light.

They offer a wide selection of both hot and cold udon (thick Japanese wheat noodles), and people say you really can’t go wrong no matter what you order.
The photo shows the hot udon dish “Niku Kamatama.” It comes with large slices of beef seasoned in a suki-ni style, and the slightly sweet flavor is said to go well with the udon and egg.

The udon has a firm bite and a smooth, slippery texture, while the dashi broth is Kansai style with the aroma of iriko (dried sardines) coming through, so good you will want to finish every last drop. The tempura is pre-fried, but there is a wide variety to choose from, which makes picking your favorites part of the fun. Whether you keep it simple with kake udon or load it up with plenty of tempura, it is a highly satisfying bowl. The prices are reasonable too, making it perfect for lunch or a quick dinner.

I used to stop by from time to time for lunch, but this time I visited because you can also drink here at night like an izakaya. The All you can drink option, available in 30-minute increments, is convenient, and the tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet) made with udon broth is outstanding. As you would expect from an udon shop, it is also a nice touch that you can have dishes like tempura and croquettes as snacks. To finish, the chewy Sanuki udon (Kagawa-style udon) was irresistible. It was great.

This Sanuki udon (thick wheat noodles) specialty restaurant is located near the lush Toyama Koen (Toyama Park) in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and is said to have a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy for anyone to drop in.
Its bright and casual feel stands out, and it seems popular with a wide range of guests, from solo diners to families. It is also easy to access from the Okubo area.
The udon at this restaurant is on the thicker side with a firm bite, and it is said to be a good pick for people who like a stronger dashi broth.
The popular standard menu item “kashiwa-ten bukkake (cold udon with chicken tempura)” gets great reviews for its freshly fried kashiwa-ten (chicken tempura), which tastes great with the udon. When you bite into the crisp coating, the rich flavor of the chicken is said to burst out from inside.
Photograph:komesan777
The signature menu item, “Gokujo no Niku Udon,” is topped with sukiyaki-style meat made with top-grade Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black beef).
The rich flavor unique to juicy Kuroge Wagyu melts into the broth, letting you enjoy its refined taste together with the udon.

Kashiwa-ten bukkake udon. The 4 pieces of kashiwa-ten (chicken tempura) are nice and crispy, and the chicken itself is juicy and full of flavor. Having 4 pieces also feels like a generous portion. After pouring over the sauce, you mix in the grated daikon radish and bonito flakes before eating. The udon has a chewy texture. It goes down nice and smooth.

I was tempted by the beef udon and curry udon, but since it was cold, I went with the thick starchy udon topped with plenty of grated ginger. It also came with lots of green onions, and by the time I finished eating, I felt nice and warm. It was light, but the dashi broth had a rich flavor and was very good! Maybe I’ll go for the curry udon next time.

This Japanese restaurant is located inside Hotel Rose Garden Shinjuku, about a 1-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Nishi-Shinjuku Station. You can enjoy creative Japanese cuisine that changes with the seasons.
The wood-based interior has a calm, modern Japanese feel. It is well liked as a place where you can relax and fully enjoy your meal.

A popular lunch item is Ishigaki-mo Udon, made by kneading in akamoku (seaweed). The green noodles really stand out.
The udon is served on Ishigaki kawara (roof tiles) specially made in Shimane Prefecture, and people say the crisp sear and Fresh Scent of the Ocean are irresistible.
Photograph:Jerid
In addition to the standard menu, Ishigaki-mo Udon also offers Awase Kamo Nanban and Awase Iwachu-buta (Iwachu pork).
Awase Iwachu-buta is a dish with Iwachu-buta covering the udon. The roasted Iwachu-buta is large, and it is said to be exceptionally good, with juicy flavor spreading through every bite.

I visited on the weekend at lunch time with a reservation for the Ishigaki-gawara (Ishigaki roof tile) mo-udon plan, which came with a colorful hassun (small assorted appetizer platter), a kobachi (small side dish), a toast drink, and coffee. For the toast drink, you can choose from beer, wine, Japanese sake, shochu, and more. The food was healthy and nice to look at, and the after-meal coffee was self-service. You can relax and spend your time comfortably in the calm interior.

It is conveniently located right ליד Nishi-Shinjuku Station. I visited for lunch on a weekday. It was my first time trying mo-udon (seaweed udon), and it was tasty with no strong distinctive flavor. The meat was juicy. The small side dishes also came in a wide variety, making it a satisfying lunch. The atmosphere is nice, so it seems like a good choice for occasions such as business meals.

Places to enjoy udon in the Tokyo Nihonbashi area
Photograph:nobor718
This restaurant, known for its popular miso nikomi udon (miso simmered udon), has received the "Tabelog Udon EAST Tabelog 100" award.
Located in the Yaesu Underground Mall at JR Tokyo Station, it is said to have a comfortable atmosphere where you can relax, even though it is right near the Shinkansen ticket gates.
The signature dish is miso nikomi udon (udon simmered in miso broth). It uses miso made by faithfully recreating an authentic Nagoya recipe.
It is known for the firm noodles and the rich depth of Nagoya-style miso, and people say its addictive good taste keeps them coming back. There is also a wide variety of options, including "tsukune (chicken meatball) iri (with added chicken meatballs)" and "mochi (rice cake) iri (with added rice cake)."
Photograph:suesu891
They also offer kishimen (flat wheat noodles), another Nagoya specialty. It is recommended when you want a light noodle dish.
The photo shows the simple “zaru kishimen,” which lets you enjoy the noodles as they are. The wide noodles have a nice, moderate chew, and you can enjoy their smooth texture and easy slurp.

・Miso nikomi udon (miso stewed udon)
When you lift the lid, it is still bubbling away. There is a sign that says if you like softer noodles, you can leave the lid on and wait for them to soften, but I think Nagoya-style miso nikomi udon is best eaten while the noodles are still firm. Be careful not to burn yourself as you dig in. The red miso really hits the spot. This is it, this is the taste!!

真壁かべ
Wrapped in moody, calm lighting, the place has an atmosphere that makes you want to drop in casually after shopping or work. The spacious table seating is well suited for groups, and the refined air that makes you forget the bustle of the underground shopping area is part of its charm. The signature miso nikomi udon (udon simmered in miso broth) gives off the rich aroma of hatcho miso (dark soybean miso), and with one sip, its depth and umami sink right into your body.

Located in a quiet residential area about a 7-minute walk from Suitengumae Station on the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line, Taniya Kazu has been getting attention for its udon kaiseki (multi-course meal centered on udon), created through a collaboration between a popular udon shop and a well-known Kyoto cuisine restaurant.
The restaurant is set in a renovated traditional Japanese house, and it is said to have an outstanding Japanese atmosphere that brings to mind an old kura (traditional storehouse).
Photograph:ey318
The menu consists only of a kaiseki (traditional multi-course meal) course selected by the chef as Omakase, and To finish they serve firm, hand-cut udon, according to guests. You can choose your udon from several varieties.
The signature karasumi (dried mullet roe) udon is said to be irresistible, with its smooth noodles and finely shaved karasumi.

As it was the height of midsummer, I enjoyed seasonal dishes with a cool, refreshing feel that really brought summer to mind. Every dish made good use of Kyoto style dashi broth and tasted great, making the meal a real pleasure. This long-established Inaniwa udon restaurant serves gently flavored dashi. I chose hot udon. Sesame, green onion, and chicken tempura. Shrimp tempura with simmered eggs. The chicken thigh tempura was hot and crispy, and the soy sauce dashi with fragrant sesame was a combination that could not go wrong. The egg-bound version had even more dashi flavor, and the eggs were gentle. The two pieces of shrimp tempura were also crispy, and this was excellent too.

Places to Enjoy Udon in Tokyo's Akihabara, Kanda, and Suidobashi Area

Takeya is known for its tasty thin udon noodles, a style passed down since its founding in 1987. It has been selected for the "Tabelog Udon EAST Tabelog 100".
In addition to udon, it also offers a wide range of seasonal small plates, so it is also recommended as an izakaya at night. The nearest station is Ochanomizu Station, but it is also within walking distance of Akihabara Station.

The udon at this restaurant is known for its thin noodles with a firm bite. Another draw is its secret broth, blended with kombu kelp and many kinds of shaved bonito flakes.
The most popular item of all is the "Ebi Ten Curry Udon," which recreates the flavors of Kyushu. It is said to be a satisfying bowl where the creamy Western style broth and freshly fried shrimp tempura pair well with the noodles.
The winter-only "kaki-toji udon (udon with oysters and egg)" is a popular menu item that people say is perfect for the cold season.
It is packed with plump oysters, and the gently flavored dashi broth bound with egg is said to be irresistible. Some also say the aroma of mitsuba (Japanese parsley) adds a nice accent and keeps the flavor interesting until the last bite.

The old school design of the shop gives it a welcoming feel that makes it easy for people of all ages to walk in. Shrimp tempura curry udon (half). It comes with shrimp tempura and udon in a creamy curry dashi broth. The soup has a nice balance of the sweetness of Kyushu shoyu (soy sauce from Kyushu) and spices. This popular udon dining spot lets you enjoy Musashino udon, a style passed down in northern Saitama Prefecture, right in Tokyo. It is about a 2-minute walk from the Setagaya-dori Exit of Sangenjaya Station.
The interior is said to be compact yet clean. It is recommended for a casual lunch during the day, or for enjoying a few dishes with a drink in hand at night.
The udon made by the owner, who was born in the birthplace of Musashino udon, follows a handmade style rooted in traditional methods. It is known for its glossy look and pleasantly firm bite.
The house made dipping sauce uses no chemical seasonings and is made by drawing out flavor from natural ingredients such as katsuobushi (bonito flakes), ago (flying fish), and kombu kelp.

The restaurant’s most popular dish, the "Niku Negi Tsukejiru Udon," is said to be a great way to fully enjoy Musashino udon (firm, chewy udon noodles) with its satisfying bite.
The dipping broth includes pork belly, grilled naganegi (long green onion), and aburaage (fried tofu), and is packed with the good flavors of the ingredients.

Since it was my first visit, I started by ordering the most popular item, the meat and green onion tsuke-udon (udon served with dipping broth). The ladies' set even comes with tempura and pineapple. The dipping broth has a slightly sweet dashi flavor. The udon is thick, glossy, and has a nice chew! The Omakase vegetable tempura was onion and kabocha (Japanese pumpkin). Onion tempura is rare! It was delicious.

It has a really nice atmosphere, and everything is good from the otoshi (appetizer served at the start)! My favorite menu items are the macaroni udon salad and tebasaki gyoza (chicken wing dumplings), but I also like all of the tempura and sashimi. To finish, it’s nice that you can have udon, and since some people also come just to eat udon as a regular meal, I recommend it even just for dining.

This udon restaurant is about a 5-minute walk from Yutenji Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, and serves Sanuki udon (Kagawa-style udon) made with careful attention to flour and dashi (Japanese soup stock).

This restaurant sits just after you pass through a residential area and come out along the train tracks. Inside, retro electric fans give the place a nice local feel. At the start, they ask how much udon you want. The chikuwa tempura was filling, had a great bite, and tasted great, and the Sanuki udon (Kagawa-style udon) was the best I’ve had in Tokyo so far. The iidako (baby octopus) tempura my companion ordered was also outstanding.

Since it was my first time at this udon restaurant, I went with the standard hot kake udon. I got a Large size of noodles and added wakame (seaweed) as a topping. The regular portion is 300g. The Large size is 450g. The dashi broth has a very gentle taste. The more you drink it, the more you notice its refined flavor. Most importantly, the udon itself is pleasantly chewy, with the aroma of wheat, and very tasty. Even served hot, it still has that firm bite of true Sanuki udon. I’m happy you can get it in Tokyo too〜.

Places to enjoy udon in Tokyo's Ryogoku, Kinshicho, and Koiwa areas
Photograph:s-shigeo
Ishiusu-biki Udon Shuhari, about a 2-minute walk from the north exit of Kinshicho Station, is a popular spot where you can enjoy Edo Tokyo Udon, made using a method from the Edo period, in a casual izakaya-style setting.
The interior is small but has a cozy, homey feel where you can take your time and enjoy your meal.
Photograph:okdyuj
Their signature item is a special udon made with great care using an Edo-period method in which wheat is milled with a stone mill.
It looks a bit like inaka soba (country-style buckwheat noodles) made with buckwheat flour, but once you take a bite, you can really taste the flavor of the wheat flour. Its chewy texture is also said to be one reason for its popularity.

The udon menu has a wide lineup, from classics to more unusual options, including meat, tomato, and curry.
The highly rated kamo-jiru udon (udon with duck dipping broth) is said to let you enjoy refined duck meat that is moist and tender. It is also well known for pairing nicely with the broth, which has a deep aroma and rich flavor.

I visited because I heard there was a quietly tucked away and delicious izakaya (Japanese pub) in Kinshicho. The food was good overall, with a creative style to many of the dishes. You enter by going down to the basement, and the inside has a calm atmosphere. There are about 45 table seats in total, making it a nice place to relax, talk, and enjoy drinks. I finished with some tasty udon (Japanese wheat noodles) and left completely Manzoku.

Kamojiru udon (udon in duck broth). The dashi broth is completely different from others. The umami is top-notch, with seafood-based dashi that gives it depth. Why is it this good? A happy question. The noodles are extra thick. Even though I usually like Inaniwa udon, I still finished this and loved it. The house-made noodles have a nice wheat aroma, go down smoothly, and are easy to eat. I finished every last drop of the soup too.

This udon izakaya has a good reputation for serving Japanese cuisine made with seasonal ingredients along with rare Japanese sake, and it is about a 5-minute walk from Kinshicho Station on the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line.
The interior has the warm feel of wood and a casual atmosphere that makes it easy for anyone to drop in. It is also a good choice when you want to enjoy a quick drink.
Photograph:むるおっか
The udon shipped directly from Sanuki in Kagawa is said to stand out for its firm noodles and flavorful dashi broth.
The photo shows the “kamatama mentaiko butter udon.” Mentaiko (spicy pollock roe), butter, and fragrant nori (seaweed) are beautifully topped over the udon, and people say it delivers both great looks and Manzoku in flavor.

At night, the lineup of dishes pairs well with Japanese sake, shochu, and wine, so you can enjoy it like an izakaya.
The fresh oysters the restaurant proudly recommends are said to have an irresistible concentrated umami flavor. It seems they source oysters from all over Japan, choosing the ones in the best condition at the time.

There were so many kinds of udon that it was hard to choose, but I finally went with Kitsune (deep-fried tofu) udon. The impressive thick piece of agedashi tofu first caught me by surprise, and it was well seasoned, making for a very satisfying bowl. The steady stream of customers coming in also showed just how popular this place is.

The udon had a nice firm chew and tasted great. They also have a wide selection of drinks, and I think Japanese sake goes well with the udon too. The vegetable tempura used seasonal vegetables and was very tasty. I think it also tastes good with salt. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice, and you can enjoy your meal at a relaxed pace.

Restaurants in other areas of Tokyo where you can enjoy udon

Located on the 7th floor of the directly connected commercial complex Shibuya Hikarie, linked to (Each) Shibuya Station line, Saryo Isetojiro is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy local dishes from Mie Prefecture.
Inside, a refined Japanese modern space opens up, and the window seats let you enjoy your meal while taking in the views of Shibuya, Tokyo.

One of Mie’s local specialties, the Ise udon (thick local udon) menu is popular. It features the thick, soft, chewy noodles you only get in the area, along with a rich sauce based on tamari soy sauce.
Despite its simple appearance, reviews say it is full of aroma and umami, and so good it naturally brings a smile to your face.
Photograph:自称カレー王
The restaurant offers a full lineup of dishes made with ingredients from Mie, including Matsusaka-gyu (Matsusaka beef) and Matsusaka Premium Pork.
For those who want to enjoy both Matsusaka-gyu and udon, the Matsusaka-gyu Curry Udon Set is recommended. The key point is the sukiyaki-style flavor of the Matsusaka-gyu in the udon.

I was craving Ise udon (thick and soft local udon), so I visited this restaurant where you can easily enjoy local dishes from Mie Prefecture. I had the set with Ise udon and chicken tempura. For the rice item, you can choose from takikomi gohan (seasoned rice), inari sushi, and more. The thick, soft noodles that are unique to Ise udon paired really well with the tamari soy sauce broth, and it was delicious.

Kangaeruna, Udon Kue. is about a 3-minute walk from Tamachi Station and is well known for its tasty Sanuki udon and tempura, both specialties of Kagawa Prefecture.
Popular as a Sanuki udon restaurant during the day and an izakaya serving local Kagawa dishes at night. Seating is available on the 1st and 2nd floors.

Among the several udon menu items, the most recommended seems to be the “hiyakake” made with iriko (dried sardine) broth.
It is a reliably tasty dish that lets you simply enjoy the firm bite of the udon noodles and the carefully made broth, and it is recommended on both hot days and cold days.
Photograph:f4d662
For lunch, the popular choice is a set that lets you enjoy udon and tempura at the same time. You can choose between kake udon and bukkake udon.
On this day, the "Tempura Three-Item Assortment Udon" came with chicken tempura, sweet potato tempura, and chikuwa isobe-age (fried fish cake with seaweed batter). Everything was freshly fried and crispy, and it seems very filling.
CFDPHiro
The kake udon comes with easy to understand tempura assortment options of either 2 or 3 pieces. The balance of tori-ten (chicken tempura), satsumaimo-ten (sweet potato tempura), and chikuwa-ten (fish cake tempura) is also nice. The sweet potato is fluffy, the chicken is juicy, and the chikuwa has a nice bite, so each one plays its own role. Choosing the recommended hiyakake (cold udon in chilled broth) was the right call! It lets you directly feel the udon's firm chew, and it's delicious.

The interior was casual and comfortable, and the izakaya menu was extensive. We enjoyed oden (Japanese stew) and chicken skin with ponzu sauce, and I liked that To finish, the udon could be chosen based on each person's preference. The udon had a nice chew and felt satisfying. I would like to visit again.

Nikutsuke Udon Utsuke Kasumigaseki Iino Biru Ten, about a 1-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Kasumigaseki Station, is well known for its hearty udon.
Lunch centers on udon, but the dinner menu is also extensive, so it is also recommended for use as an izakaya (Japanese pub). It seems to be an easy place to stop by whether you are alone or with a group.
Photograph:PITO
The specialty here is tsuke-udon (udon served with dipping broth), a menu where you dip the noodles into the broth before eating. You can choose from three sizes: regular, large, and extra large.
The dipping broth for the “Gyuniku Kara Tsuke Udon” has just the right spicy kick, and adding an egg makes the flavor milder. It also seems to come with a good amount of beef.

According to reviews, the popular hot kake udon menu item is "toriten udon (udon with chicken tempura)." Diners say you can enjoy thick, firm flat noodles and large pieces of chicken tempura.
The toriten is served freshly fried and crispy, and some reviews say that when you bite into the meat, the juices burst out, making it irresistibly good!

Sometimes I really crave udon (thick Japanese wheat noodles). Today was one of those days, so I ordered tori-ten udon (udon with chicken tempura). The firm noodles had a nice bite, and the large pieces of chicken tempura made it a very satisfying bowl. The dashi (Japanese soup stock) in the soup also tasted wholesome, making it a bowl I was very happy with. It was a great meal!

・Pork atsujiru (hot dipping broth) tsuke udon
The udon had amazing chew. The dipping sauce with pork and green onion was also very good. You can add tenkasu (tempura bits), sesame seeds, and shichimi (Japanese seven-spice) to taste. At the end, I added shirodashi (light Japanese soup stock), and enjoyed the dipping sauce to the last drop.

This restaurant lets you enjoy udon (Japanese wheat noodles) that have been carried on for more than 30 years since its founding, in a stylish space. It is on the 7th floor of a building, about a 1-minute walk from Roppongi Station.
At night, you can look out over the Roppongi night view, and it is said to have a wide range of seating, including Private room and terrace seats. There were also reviews saying it has the feel of a cafe or dining spot, where you can spend an elegant moment.

One of the specialties here is a udon (thick Japanese wheat noodles) bowl bigger than your face. You can increase the amount of udon up to 3 portions for free, so it is also perfect for people who want a filling meal.
They also offer seasonal limited-time dishes and original menu items exclusive to the Roppongi location, making this a lineup that will keep you coming back again and again.
Photograph:ysen5
There is also a wide range of Western-style cream-based udon, and the refined presentation is part of the appeal. The photo shows the "mentaiko (spicy pollock roe) cream udon".
The salty, rich flavor of the mentaiko blends well into the mild cream soup, and it coats the smooth, pleasantly chewy udon nicely.
岸本和希
The menu ranges widely from standard Kitsune (deep-fried tofu) udon and curry udon to creative udon such as cream-based versions and sukiyaki-style options, so you can choose to match your mood and taste. The creamy and Western-style udon in particular have a strong original feel that you can only find here, making them a fresh and enjoyable experience even for people who are used to eating udon.

It was my first visit! The atmosphere was lovely, and the refined, upscale feel was hard to believe for an udon and soba restaurant, which made it easy to relax and enjoy a slow, peaceful time. This popular dining spot near Akabane Station in Kita City, Tokyo, is known for its homemade Sanuki udon (thick wheat noodles). They also offer a wide selection of drinks and à la carte dishes.

There are about 40 udon menu items available at all times, and you can also enjoy seasonal and limited-quantity specials.
The house-made noodles have a chewy texture, and are said to be perfect for people who like udon with a firm bite and sharp Kaku. They also pair perfectly with the gently flavored house-made dashi broth.

The curry udon, said to be a great pick for the cold season, comes in several varieties, including one with eggplant and one with meat.
One of the kake udon menu items, “cheese curry,” is a warming bowl topped with melted cheese over spicy curry broth.

・Kashiwa-ten (chicken tempura) tsuke udon
It was marked as a recommendation, so I ordered this. The udon had a nice chewy bite and springy texture, and it was delicious. It was so good and addictive. The kashiwa-ten came with 3 large pieces. The chicken was tender, and the batter was crispy and juicy, going perfectly with the udon and dipping broth.
