An izakaya in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture

Kitchen Hikaru is an izakaya where you can fully enjoy the calm atmosphere of a traditional Japanese kappo-style eatery. It serves washoku (Japanese cuisine) and Okinawa ryori (Okinawan cuisine).
The comfortable Japanese-style interior features clean wood-grain tones with pendant lights as an accent. In addition to table seating, the restaurant offers spacious counter seats.

Lined up on the counter are obanzai (Kyoto-style home-cooked side dishes) made without chemical seasonings.
Obanzai originally refers to Kyoto home cooking and deli-style dishes, and at this restaurant you can enjoy Japanese side dishes made with ingredients sourced that day.

The "[Signature Dish] Tsufu chawanmushi (rich savory egg custard)" is a signature menu item made with luxury ingredients such as ikura (salmon roe), uni (sea urchin), and unagi (eel).
Chawanmushi is a traditional Japanese dish made by adding ingredients to an egg mixture combined with dashi, then steaming it in a tea cup until set.
たんぽぽ日記
Everything uses high-quality ingredients in a luxurious way, and each dish is carefully made and delicious. Even if some Japanese sake is not listed on the menu, there are plenty more in the refrigerator. The staff are friendly and also introduced recommended Japanese sake. Since the menu is handwritten, it changes with the seasons, so you are not likely to get tired of it.

The dishes are lined up right in front of the counter, so they are fun to look at as well. The interior is clean and calm, and I was able to relax and take my time. I had been thinking about going to a second or third place, but everything was so good that I ended up eating a lot and getting completely full (lol). The sushi they happened to have that day was also excellent. They also have a wide selection of drinks.

Shabu-shabu made with Pineapple Pork, a rare brand of pork raised on a farm in Okinawa Prefecture where the pigs grow up eating pineapple, is popular.
Shabu-shabu is one of Japan’s beloved Hot Pot dishes, where you swish thinly sliced meat and vegetables through broth before eating them. It also goes great with Okinawan drinks.

The manager is an Okinawa Prefectural Governor certified awamori (traditional Okinawan distilled spirit) meister. They can recommend labels that pair well with your meal from a selection of more than 200 kinds, including those from Okinawan awamori distilleries.
Awamori is a traditional distilled spirit from Okinawa. Be sure to pair it with tsuke mozuku (mozuku seaweed served with sauce), an izakaya dish you dip into the sauce and slurp down.

I visited Okinawa no Jimanya-san for the first time. The shabu-shabu was really delicious ^_^ The interior is also spacious. It does have zashiki (tatami seating), though. lol There are also lots of a la carte options besides the shabu-shabu, so it was hard to choose what to eat, from goya chanpuru (bitter melon stir-fry) to tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) and more. lol Everything was tasty, and I’ll definitely visit again!

The All you can drink plan came with tasty pork shabu-shabu, and we could also enjoy Okinawan dishes like mozuku (Okinawan seaweed), so we were very Manzoku! Easy on the wallet, and the food was great! Even though it was Sunday night, the restaurant was fully booked with reservations. No surprise. I was so focused on eating that I forgot to take photos of the other dishes, but it was a place I can truly recommend.

Reviews rate the seafood highly, and you can enjoy a range of dishes made with local and nearby catch, including gurukun (banana fish), a fish from Okinawa Prefecture, and Kuruma ebi (Japanese tiger prawns) from Kumejima.
They are also known for their Imaiyu (freshly caught fish) prepared whole, with daily local fish served as sugata-zukuri (sashimi presentation of the whole fish) or as maasu-ni, simmered with salt and awamori (Okinawan rice liquor).

They offer more than 200 kinds of awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit), including signature labels from over 40 distilleries, along with awamori and kusu (long aged awamori).

Since our group was large, we made a reservation for a course meal. The course had many classic Okinawan dishes that really made you think, this is Okinawa cuisine!, so I think it is perfect for anyone wanting to eat Okinawa cuisine. The flavors were slightly on the strong side, which was just right for drinking, and everything was very delicious! It was a great meal!

First, we toasted with Orion Beer. We ordered tuna and today's sashimi. Today's sashimi was irabucha (a blue fish in the parrotfish family). Irabucha looks blue like a tropical fish, but it is a type of parrotfish. It has white flesh and a mild flavor. Both were fresh. We had them with Okinawan soy sauce from Aka Marusou. Next, we had awamori (Okinawan distilled liquor) koshu (aged liquor). They have a wide selection of awamori.

Around Kokusai-dori (International Street), the largest downtown area in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, restaurants, souvenir shops, and other stores line the streets. It is in a great location, just a 1-minute walk from Kencho-mae Station on the Yui Rail.
At the izakaya (Japanese pub) Okinawa Sakaba Haisai Naha Honten, people speak highly of the good Okinawan food and the friendly service from the staff.
Recommended dishes include menu items made with Okinawa-style ingredients such as Kibimaru-buta (pork raised on sugarcane and other feed), Yanbaru waka-dori (young chicken from Yanbaru), and Wagyu from Ishigaki Island.
The "Kibimaru-buta Roast Steak" is known for the natural sweetness of the pork.

The photo shows the "Hanbun Nama-shibori Pine Sour" (half-fresh-squeezed pineapple sour), where you squeeze the pineapple yourself, limited to 10 glasses. It is a fresh and juicy tropical sour.
They also serve Orion Beer (draft), one of Okinawa’s best-known beers, made with water from Yanbaru in Okinawa and locally grown barley.

The restaurant is not very large, but it had a lively atmosphere and everything was good. Even the classic goya chanpuru (Okinawan bitter melon stir-fry) and mozuku tempura (tempura fried seaweed) went great with drinks. It was such a popular restaurant that the phone kept ringing nonstop the whole time I was eating, so reservations are a must.

From jiimami dofu (peanut tofu) to my favorite mozuku tempura and Okinawa soba, every single dish was carefully made and delicious. When we made a toast, the Okinawan style cheer "Kaarii" and the staff’s gentle smiles were so comforting! The staff helped us kindly and carefully throughout, which made it such a great parent and child trip♡ I highly recommend it!

The pictured tebachu (middle section of chicken wings) is an original dish that takes plenty of time to prepare and is grilled over charcoal.

One creative small dish after another came out in kobachi (small bowls), and each time felt exciting. The explanations of the ingredients were easy to follow, and I enjoyed everything. There is a long counter, and there are table seats in the back as well, and the staff have a nice vibe. It seems comfortable even for solo diners. After talking with the manager, I found out that a sushi place I had visited before and liked was also a sister restaurant of this one.

Uojimaya Kumoji Honten is an izakaya where fishing glass floats stand out as stylish interior decor.
The restaurant draws a wide range of guests and stays lively. In addition to à la carte dishes, they also offer courses with All you can drink.
On the menu is an outstandingly fresh lineup of seafood delivered from fishing ports across Japan, including Hokkaido, far from Okinawa.
The specialties are more than 20 daily changing dishes and sashimi assortments featuring hon-maguro (bluefin tuna) otoro, chutoro, akami, and fresh fish.

The alcohol selection includes Japanese sake from (Each) region, shochu, and awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit), so you can enjoy them in ways that match the seasonal ingredients.
Along with the well reviewed tuna dishes such as sashimi, fried items, and grilled items, you can fully enjoy Japanese drinks that pair well with them.
The interior is a cozy, homey space with the feel of a port town, and it was lively with both locals and tourists. The sashimi and kaisen-don (seafood Rice bowl) made with fresh seafood all look beautiful, and the rich flavor of the fish fills your mouth. In particular, the tuna and white fish from the waters off Okinawa had a nice amount of fat and an enjoyable texture.

I visited because I heard the sashimi was good. I think this place specializes in maguro (tuna), but everything was reasonably priced, easy to enjoy, and tasty. The charcoal grilled chicken, with a name like tori no wasabi-yaki (grilled chicken with wasabi), had a light wasabi kick and was delicious. This robatayaki (Japanese hearth-grilled) restaurant was just right for a small group to relax and chat.

Jinsei Sakaba Okinawa Ten is an izakaya where you can enjoy authentic Korean food in Okinawa. Its dazzling exterior standing out in the nightlife district catches the eye.
Inside, the warm space brings to mind a Korean home, and the cherry blossoms decorating the ceiling are also said to leave an impression. There are table seats, Semi-private room seating, and zashiki (tatami seating), so you can enjoy a wide range of Korean dishes whether you come with a small or large group.

The chef, who knows the local flavors inside and out, offers a lineup of Homemade dishes. Among them, chijimi (Korean savory pancake), made by mixing ingredients into a flour-based batter and grilling it, is especially popular.
You can choose from 12 varieties, including the "Taikyoku Chijimi," topped half with kimchi and half with seafood.

You can enjoy an authentic taste here, with familiar Korean dishes such as "japchae" and "Teppan-yaki samgyeopsal" on the menu.
For drinks, they also serve "Original Makgeolli," made with 100% fresh makgeolli (traditional Korean cloudy rice wine), so you can enjoy it along with the food.

Located along Kokusai-dori (Kokusai Street), the Okinawan cuisine izakaya Buranchu sits in an area lined with restaurants serving Okinawan local dishes, with Yatai Mura and Noren-gai also close by.

In Okinawa, chanpuru (stir-fry) refers to stir-fried dishes, and besides the classic goya (bitter melon), there are also somen and tofu versions.
To go with drinks, the recommended choice is the "5-item assortment," which lets you pick five snacks such as umi-budo (sea grapes) and mimiga ponzu (ponzu-dressed pig ear cartilage).
Photograph:katsuグルメ
For drinks, they offer umeshu (plum wine) and highballs made with shiikuwasa (Okinawan citrus), whose name is said to come from an Okinawan dialect.
The “Fresh Shiikuwasa Sour” lets you enjoy the texture of fresh fruit pulp, making it an irresistibly refreshing and fresh drink.
katsuグルメ
For drinks, go for a sour packed with fresh shiikuwasa (Okinawan citrus) juice, something you can only really find in Okinawa! It has a nice, refreshing taste! (I also had some habushu (Okinawan snake-infused liquor) partway through lol) From the middle to the end of the meal, I really enjoyed the fried dishes and other cooked items! The "shima-dofu (Okinawan tofu) no atsuage (deep-fried tofu)" was so good it might have been my top recommendation. It looks kind of nostalgic, or maybe just cute!

This izakaya offers modern and stylish yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) in a setting with a Japanese feel. It has counter seating and Private room options, so you can choose based on your mood or group size.
In addition to several course options, including skewer-focused courses and trial courses, you can also order a la carte.
They use high-quality Yamato Nikudori (local Nara chicken) from Nara Prefecture, served in a range of styles such as tataki (lightly seared) and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).
The smoky aroma, concentrated flavor, and satisfying bite are said to be especially good. Yakitori comes in a variety of cuts, but quantities are limited, so it’s best to order early.

The drink lineup is extensive, so you can choose to match your meal, with options including Japanese sake, shochu, and awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit), among many others. You can enjoy them with yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), grilled vegetables, and other carefully made dishes.
They also say that natural wine pairs well with yakitori.
Eating Pleasure
The firm bite of the chicken is quite nice. Since they grill it over charcoal, it has a good toasty aroma. They also serve things like tori no Kara-age, and the coating is crispy, making it tasty in terms of texture too. The chicken in the simmered dish is very good, and the papaya and taanmu (taro) in it have an interesting texture as well, so I think I enjoyed everything from the first hors d'oeuvre to the closing dessert very much, and it all tasted great.

かひちゃんぽん
The yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) are delicious, with each skewer prepared with great care. Today’s Omakase five-skewer set was sasami (chicken tenderloin), liver, kata-niku (shoulder meat), yagen Cartilage, and chicken wings. First, the sasami and liver were served rare. The cooking was spot on and tasted great. The kata-niku had a firm texture that was different from either thigh or breast, and its rich flavor really came through. The yagen Cartilage had that nice crunchy texture and the reliably good taste you want.

The restaurant’s top recommendation is the "shima sashi assortment," made with fresh fish caught in the waters off Okinawa and delivered daily.
In addition to seafood, they also serve "temahima kaketa jikasei rafute (house made rafute, Okinawan braised pork, made with great care)," a chance to enjoy one of Okinawa’s signature pork dishes. For now, everything was fresh and delicious!! The rafute (Okinawan braised pork belly) was so tender I could pull it apart with chopsticks, and it melted in my mouth. In addition to the day's recommended dishes and sashimi, you can also enjoy seafood in a range of menu items, including bata-yaki (butter grilled fish), a dish often found on local tables.

First, we made a toast with Orion Draft. For Appetizers, we had shima rakkyo (pickled Okinawan shallots) and zaru mozuku (drained mozuku seaweed), a combo that has already become a sure thing in our home. The hechima chanpuru (stir-fried loofah) comes with a miso base and tastes so good it beats your expectations in the best way. The sashimi assortment centered on local fish, as well as the sushi & sashimi set packed with maguro (tuna), also felt gorgeous and indulgent.

You can fully enjoy Okinawan cuisine here. Even the sashimi uses Okinawan fish, so even when I heard their names, I could not quite remember them lol. To finish, I of course had Okinawa soba (Okinawan noodles) and jiishi (Okinawan seasoned rice).

They offer a wide variety of awamori (Okinawan distilled liquor), and a tasting set that lets you compare three labels is also said to be popular.
There are easy to drink options, the restaurant’s own selection, and a set where you can choose any three labels from 11 kinds, so you can enjoy them to match your food.

The first day of our Okinawa trip. The sun was setting outside the window. In that kind of setting, Okinawan food while listening to shima-uta (traditional Okinawan folk songs) was the best. They had local ingredients like jiimami tofu (peanut tofu), shima-rakkyo (Okinawan shallots), and Ie-gyu (Ie Island beef), along with a wide selection of awamori (Okinawan distilled liquor). It is a very Okinawa-like restaurant. It is a place that makes you want to come back, and it is perfect for travel memories. It was a great meal. We will come again.

The selection of awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit) is stunning, and I enjoyed everything from tasting flights to rare bottles. Depending on the timing, they also have live Okinawan folk music, and the staff's attentive service made it a wonderful time.

An izakaya (Japanese pub) in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture

Ryukyu Dining Yamoriya is an izakaya (Japanese pub) with a calm atmosphere, in a great location overlooking Nago Bay.
In addition to counter seating, they also have raised window-side seating with a view of the beautiful sunset, so it is also recommended for an early dinner.

They also offer shabu-shabu set courses that you can order from per person.
The photo shows the “Yanbaru Shima-buta Agu Shabu-shabu Set.” This course includes shima-dofu (island tofu) and Agu gyoza, and it ends with Okinawa soba, according to reviews.

A wide selection of local craft beer from Nago City is another big draw. The photo shows "Iruka no Ale," made by a brewery in Nago City.
The colorful cocktail "Paradise Angel" and "46 Shuzo-dokoro Awamori (46 Distilleries Awamori)" are also said to be popular. They are perfect for enjoying while taking in the beautiful beach views.

The Agu pork shabu-shabu (Agu pork hotpot) was fantastic! There were a few tables where you can dine while watching the sunset, and I really appreciated that they had prepared one for us. The beautiful food and scenery made for a truly rich and fulfilling time from the heart. It was a great meal.

" Nakijin-san (from Nakijin) goat sashimi " also came with ginger and had no off notes. We also had two kinds of craft beer. Yoru Neko is a dark beer. Yanbaru-kei IPA is a crisp beer. We enjoyed them while having a fun chat with the staff.

This restaurant is located in Nago, in an area surrounded by the forested mountains known as Yanbaru and the beautiful sea. Fresh local ingredients are a big draw, and this Okinawan izakaya serves dishes such as Agu pork and Yanbaru vegetables.
It has a homey atmosphere, and you can also enjoy live shima-uta (traditional island songs) performances held every day.
Photograph:食べるゾウ。
A recommended dish at this restaurant, which has been certified by Okinawa Prefecture as a local production for local consumption establishment, is shabu-shabu made with Agu buta (Okinawan native pork).
The pork is said to have no distinctive flavor and tastes sweet and delicious. Along with fresh Yanbaru yasai (vegetables from the Yanbaru region), you can also enjoy mozuku (Okinawan seaweed) in the shabu-shabu.
Photograph:絶世の美女
Along with drinks such as awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit) and Orion draft beer, the traditional Okinawan island vegetable shima rakkyo (Okinawan shallots) is a great match.
You can also fully enjoy local flavors with other Okinawan classics such as somin chanpuru (stir-fried somen noodles) and jushi (Okinawan seasoned rice).

I made a reservation just in case before going, and it was fully booked that day too, so a reservation is a must! Besides shabu-shabu, they also have a wide range of Okinawa ryori (Okinawan dishes), so you can eat, drink, and have a great time! Why is shabu-shabu so delicious? They also had live music performances, so it was a place where you could really feel Okinawa!

When we peeked inside, we saw sanshin (Okinawan three-stringed instrument) and drums. The moment we saw them, we went right in. After we entered and heard there would be a live performance, we were thrilled. We quickly ordered awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit). They had many kinds of awamori, and there were lots of ways to enjoy it. The food was also delicious. The somen chanpuru (stir-fried somen noodles) was tasty too. If we come to Kise again next year, we’d like to stop by.

An izakaya in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture

Teppen is an izakaya (Japanese pub) with restaurants across Ishigaki City. It is located near Euglena Mall, the southernmost arcade shopping street in Japan, lined with souvenir stores and other shops.
The restaurant offers a variety of seating options, making it suitable for anything from small groups to larger parties.

They use Ishigaki gyu (Ishigaki beef) certified by JA Okinawa. The restaurant serves safe, high quality Ishigaki gyu dishes, even sourcing individual identification numbers.
The Special Ishigaki gyu Aburi Nigiri is especially popular. This dish lets you enjoy short rib with either sauce or Ishigaki salt.
Photograph:tomoyan2
This is the restaurant's specialty, the “Teppen-mori (top assortment).” You can enjoy fresh seafood delivered from the local area and Yaeyama Gyoko (Yaeyama Fishing Port).
A colorful lineup of 8 kinds of seafood, centered on shimagyo (island fish), fills the plate, and the thick cuts are said to have a texture that shows just how fresh they are.

This is a wonderful restaurant where you can fully feel the atmosphere of Ishigaki-jima (Ishigaki Island). The staff were very friendly and served us carefully with smiles. Every dish was fresh and delicious, especially the Ishigaki-gyu (Ishigaki beef) and seafood, which were excellent. There was also a wide selection of drinks, including tropical cocktails. This is a restaurant I can recommend to both visitors and locals!

This restaurant served very tasty Ishigaki gyu (Ishigaki beef) nigiri!! It was so good that we got both the sauce and salt versions! Every dish is incredibly good, so it is hard to get a reservation. I recommend booking early. I would love to visit again the next time I go to Ishigaki jima (Ishigaki Island)!

For drinks, they recommend the wide selection of awamori (Okinawan distilled spirit) from Yaeyama and distilleries on Ishigaki Island.
They offer a daily lineup of 16 varieties, including the “Yaeyama-san Awamori Tasting Set.” You can enjoy them in different styles, such as on the rocks or with tea with shochu.

Just as I had been told that every place would be full unless I booked ahead, the restaurant was already full when I arrived. As soon as one group left, the next came right in, so it seemed to be a very popular spot. I enjoyed mainly Okinawa ryori (Okinawan cuisine). Even the awamori (Okinawan distilled liquor) tasting flight felt even better knowing I was drinking it on Ishigaki-jima (Ishigaki Island). The ju-shii (Okinawan seasoned rice) served in a Clay Pot was especially outstanding! It was the perfect finish when I had the last part with dashi broth!

Every dish was very good. The zarumori made with just harvested asa-tore (morning-picked produce) was filling and satisfying. I also enjoyed the freshly cooked juicy dish served in a Clay Pot. When you add dashi and eat it that way, it makes a nice finish to the meal. I will definitely visit again.

A local branded chicken from northern Okinawa, Yanbaru-dori (Yanbaru chicken), is the specialty here. The photo shows the yakitori made with skewered "Yanbaru-dori momo (chicken thigh)," which is said to have a nice springy texture and great taste.
There is also a highly satisfying lineup including grilled gyoza made with shima-buta (island pork), so you can fully enjoy Okinawan ingredients.

One of the popular menu items here is the "Special Ishigaki gyu (Ishigaki beef) Aburi Meat Sushi, 1 piece." The meat is lightly seared so the fat melts, and it is said to taste great with just salt.
"Ishigaki gyu" is a brand of beef that represents Okinawa, and it is known for having been served at a banquet during an international conference held in Okinawa.

I was surprised to see Napoleon fish in the sashimi assortment, but it tasted great too, which was nice. They also had Ishigaki gyu (Ishigaki beef) meat sushi, and it was very delicious. Awamori (Okinawan distilled liquor) is included on the All you can drink menu, and it is fun because the staff choose different kinds of awamori and explain them to you.

On my first trip to Ishigaki-jima (Ishigaki Island), I visited and chose a course meal so I could enjoy a bit of everything. Starting with shima-dofu (island tofu) salad, then tempura and a sashimi assortment, every dish was very good. As someone who loves mozuku (Okinawan seaweed), I was especially impressed to have mozuku with soba dipping sauce!
