Head to the popular izakaya (Japanese pub) in Namba! Enjoy 20 picks with a wide range of food from fish to meat

Namba, one of Osaka’s lively central districts, is home to many sightseeing spots. In Dotonbori (a popular entertainment district), you can enjoy the night views lit up by the Glico sign and neon lights, and the food scene offers local favorites such as takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes). This time, we’re focusing on izakaya (Japanese-style pubs) in Namba. We’ve rounded up popular spots where you can casually enjoy drinks and a wide range of mainly Japanese dishes, including yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and sashimi, prepared in all kinds of ways.

Sakana to Sumi to Teppan-yaki to Tototo

This izakaya is a 5-minute walk from Namba Station. It has a chic atmosphere, with counter and table seating available.

The straw grilled dishes, seafood dishes, and a la carte items prepared by a Japanese cuisine chef are all high quality, and you can enjoy pairing them with local sake from around Japan, with more than 20 varieties available at all times.

Warayaki (straw-fire grilling) is especially popular here. The dramatic flames rising during cooking create a lively, live-show feel that builds excitement for the meal as you watch.

The ingredients seem to cover a wide range, including seafood such as the classic bonito, as well as meat and vegetables.

Sashimi and sushi are said to pair perfectly with drinks. They carefully prepare appealing ingredients caught in waters from Hokkaido (Japan’s northernmost island) to Kyushu (Japan’s southwestern main island).

The “Tototo Maki” in the photo gets good reviews for both its taste and appearance.

こうくんのはらぺこ日記

The impact of the Tototo-maki is incredible after all. It tastes amazingly good too. The warayaki (straw-seared dish) is especially tasty. Above all, the sawara (Spanish mackerel) is the best.

・Kenken katsuo (skipjack tuna) straw seared
The smoky, toasty aroma you only get from wara-yaki (straw searing) runs through your whole body. It came with cherry tomatoes, sliced onions, and lettuce, so I polished it off like a salad.

In addition to classic yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) like negima (chicken and scallion skewer) and chicken tsukune (chicken meatball skewer), they also offer rare cuts, and each one is said to be served with excellent grilling.

Their simple yet stylish assortment and presentation are also part of the appeal.

An All you can drink course. Tataki and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) kept coming one after another! And every dish was pretty high quality. Even the ham katsu (fried ham cutlet) felt authentic! They had some drinks that looked great besides the All you can drink menu, so I’d like to visit again and order A la carte.

・motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot)
The motsu was carefully prepared, with a plump, springy texture that made it easy to eat. I could also taste its sweetness. The Hot Pot came with plenty of cabbage, garlic chives, and burdock root, and their nice crisp texture stood out.

The miso dashi motsu-nabe (offal Hot Pot) was quite rich and very tasty. The perfect way to finish the meal was champon noodles! They also have a good selection of drinks, including local Kyushu items, so this is a place I can recommend to people who love alcohol.

Isomaru Suisan Dotonbori Ten

This izakaya in the Namba area is part of a chain loved across a wide range of regions, from Hokkaido to Kyushu. You can enjoy fresh seafood, including their specialty hamayaki (grilled seafood).

The inside has a lively atmosphere, making it a fun place to enjoy drinks.

The popular item here is hamayaki (seafood grilled at the table), which you can enjoy while grilling it on the mesh grill set up at (Each) table. The ingredients are varied, including live shellfish just pulled from the tank and kani miso (crab innards) grilled in the shell, packed with rich flavor.

Freshly grilled seafood is served piping hot and juicy, and it apparently pairs perfectly with drinks.

They offer a wide range of dishes, including sashimi (sliced raw fish) and seafood Rice bowls with colorful presentation that looks great too, as well as shirasu (whitebait) tortilla pizza where you can enjoy a mix of Japanese and Western flavors.

All of the seafood they use is high quality and packed with umami.

The sashimi assortment is packed with tuna, buri (yellowtail), sweet shrimp, and even shellfish, and it looks beautiful too. The aji (horse mackerel) ikezukuri (prepared live) in particular has a nice firm bite and tastes very fresh. The akagai (ark shell clam) also has a great texture, and it’s just right when eaten with wasabi.
